The #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 was "Say You, Say Me" by Lionel Richie and the top-grossing film was Top Gun.That same year, a small group of people in Austin, Texas began a series of long talks about the future of entertainment and media.They believed that the local creative and music communities in Austin and other cities were as talented as anywhere else on the planet, but limited by a lack of exposure.Music brought them together, but they loved art, ideas, community — all the things that make life worth living. And they knew that inclusiveness and reaching for new things would be core to what they built.The first SXSW in March 1987 saw an expected 150 registrants swell to 700 on the opening day.Since then, SXSW has taken on a life of its own.
