Over the past 40 years, we have honed our approach to cultivate and create art that heals. Our work with those experiencing incarceration has been particularly impactful for both the men who participate in our programs, but also for our teaching artists and audience members who bear witness to the heartfelt and soulful final performance and discussion at the end of each 12-week program.
We deeply believe in collaborating with communities to empower people to share their stories, so each word in the final piece is written and performed by the men themselves. This year, residents from California State Prison LA County-Lancaster created and performed the piece, Tree of Life.

The California Arts Council has announced grant awards to TheatreWorkers Project during its 2023 grant cycle! These grants will support our Cal State LA Project Rebound program which serves formerly incarcerated students and will support our general operating fund. Thank You CAC!
We are ecstatic to continue our work strengthening our Los Angeles community through the arts.
TheatreWorkers Project was featured as part of a larger announcement from the
California Arts Council, with more than 850 grant awards totaling more than $32.75
million in projected funding projected investments for operational and project support to
nonprofit organizations and units of government throughout the state of California. The nearly $33 million in awards for the 2023 grant cycle sets a new record for the state
arts agency’s investment in California’s arts and culture workforce via permanent state
and federal allocations for local assistance funds, upwards of $2.8 million more than its
last record-setting year in 2020.
Organizations were awarded grants across six different program areas designed to
benefit the whole of California’s arts and culture ecosystem, with focused considerations
for first-time applicants, small and mid-size arts and organizations, folk and traditional
art forms, county local arts agencies and arts service organizations, and opportunities
with deep investment for both general operating and project-based support.

The clock is ticking, make a gift before the Giving Tuesday curtains close! ⏳
We love the visual of a phoenix rising from the ashes as we believe that art heals and transforms. TheatreWorkers Project provides opportunities for participants to reframe their life stories through theatre. This work is raw and vulnerable and takes an incredible amount of courage. Each person gets something different out of the TWP experience, but the collective gains both community and camaraderie. Through our work, we see people remove their masks and shed their labels as they allow themselves to be truly seen as human beings.
Thank you to those of you who have chosen to support our work today and everyday. We are so grateful for your generosity and are excited to continue our life changing work 🙏🎭

We’re halfway through Giving Tuesday!!
While much of our work focuses on incarcerated individuals, reentry, and lifers, TheatreWorkers Project has worked with youth for many years. Our most recent program engages teenage mothers at a Los Angeles continuation high school where we create a safe and non judgemental space for these young women to share and process their shared experience.
It is an honor to guide these students through the TWP process, providing prompts and compassionate guidance to compel them to draft their narrative. Our wonderfully talented teaching artists help guide them as we weave their words together and collaborate on a piece culminating in a moving performance.
Your gift fuels our programmatic work bringing the arts to unheard communities. We are ever-grateful for your support! 💚💚💚

We are so excited to participate in our first Giving Tuesday! 🎉
At TheatreWorkers Project (TWP), you hear us talking about how “every human being has a story to tell” quite frequently. The arts, specifically theatre, belong to everybody. It is a way to share our origin stories, our backgrounds, our histories, our tragedies, our love, and our lessons through story and performance.
TWP empowers these often forgotten community members as they share their incredibly inspiring stories. The words they perform are their own, the visuals shared are those they create, and the performances are beyond moving.
In the spirit of giving and generosity, we ask that you make a gift to fund our heartfelt work! Together we create opportunities for these humans to continue to use their stories and experiences to create art that heals and transforms 🙌

Giving Tuesday, the biggest giving day of the year, is here! 🎉
TheatreWorkers Project (TWP) is dedicated to providing opportunities for members of underserved and unheard communities to tell their stories through the medium of theatre and to providing classical and contemporary theatre experiences that reflect and illuminate the human condition.
We have been using theatre to illuminate social and political issues since our inception in 1983. With a rich history working with unemployed steelworkers, shipbuilders, striking meatpackers, Latino immigrant workers, critical care nurses, and longshoremen, TWP currently works with those experiencing incarceration, the formerly incarcerated, “lifers” (those on parole from serving life sentences), and teen mothers.
We believe that every human being has a story to tell and we are honored to provide the safe container, tools, guidance, and expertise to bring these powerful stories to life.
Please consider making a gift to support our life changing work this Giving Tuesday! We’re forever grateful for those who believe in our mission and allow us to continue our meaningful work 🙏🎭
