RECONSTRUCTED NATURE ⭐️🍀🌲 Uses two custom typefaces - one of @lukeandnik own handwriting, another called PLAY which I made based off wooden lettering designed to help children learn to spell. Adding to the effortless playful nature of the work and the book itself. @octaviachill wrote three great exercises in the book which encourage you two interact with nature in new and fun ways.

Thank you to everyone who made it out to the opening at the @thephotographersgallery last week 🫶🏻

Reconstructed Nature by Luke & Nik is launching @thephotographersgallery on 05-12-24 from 18:30 — 20:00, come on down and get insight into the making of this strange and wonderful book which is designed to be destroyed…

There will be a small talk with myself, @lukeandnik & @octaviachill (who wrote the wonderful text in the book), followed by a signing & drinks. But if you can’t make it down, you can pre-order the book with an A5 risograph print directly from Luke & Nik⏰🍀

The wonderful @dalia.aldu interviewed @danielmeadowsphoto for @bjp1854 about the book we made together in 2023, Book of the Road. I think it’s one of the best books I have made to date, and that’s down to the trust Daniel gave me when he handed over his immersive archive from The Free Photographic Omnibus and gave me his blessing to run with the insane idea to copy a road atlas from 1977. Resulting in a complicated but expansive book which finally honours the photographs he made 51 years ago…

If you’d like to read some of my writing about Book of the Road then head over to my website✍🏻

Dalia Al-Dujaili: What was the process of working with Bluecoat like?

Daniel Meadows: I love that a younger generation is interested in work which I produced such a long time ago. It delights me that my Bluecoat editor (Tom Booth Woodger) is almost fifty years younger than me. I gave him a completely free hand. I turned over the images and the tape transcripts and he did the rest; editing, sequencing, design, layout, printing, the whole thing and he kept me informed of what was happening all the way through. I also understand and admire the publishing model, which is a variation on traditional methods, including the payment of royalties.

DA: How has photography changed since the ’70s?

DM: For me it has stopped. In 2012 I was diagnosed with MS (multiple sclerosis) which plays hell with my energy levels and my hand-eye coordination. I no longer have a camera. I can’t find one which is the convivial tool I need. And I hate phones. Modern cameras are all far too small and fiddly with a ludicrous number of buttons on their outsides — all of which can be triggered by accident — and each button appears to activate an even more ridiculous number of sub-menus. Who needs all that choice I wonder, all that so-called ‘functionality’? What I’d like is a camera stripped bare, something like a digital version of an old-fashioned Rolleiflex. No flashing lights, no ‘display’, no fancy gizmos and just four buttons: focus, aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Find me that camera and a cure for MS and I might start taking pictures again.

Today is my birthday - and it’s the first one I’m spending without my mum who died earlier this year. In both these pictures we are the same age, both in our first year of university but taken 37 years apart.

My mum was cared for by @farleighhospice in the last weeks of her life - and like all hospices they urgently need support. My best friend Henry is running 40 miles in two weeks time to raise money for them, so if you can donate please follow the link in my bio 🎈
