“The Overview” has arrived 🥹

This book would not exist without the talented and committed individuals that cultivate the @atmos ecosystem.

Thank you to @ANOHNI for the generous foreword and all your contributions to Atmos over the years; for many reasons, speaking with you that first time left me with a sense of possibility for the future. @petermmurray, thank you for the beautiful album you composed which has become the soundtrack to all my writing.

To the many photographers whose images populate these pages, thank you for your time and artistry—your work instills a sense of reverence for this planet that my words could only ever aspire to: @ben_toms @theodegueltzl @annielai__ @jacques_brun @_chloe.azz @christiancassiel @laurenceellis @collinhughes @gleesonpaulino @vivekvad @albayruela.

@mgregory7, @tessaforrest, @_erichu, and everyone on the @atmos team, thank you for all of the time and creativity you poured into this book. And @jakesarge, where do I even start? Thank you for the late nights, for believing in me and pushing me to start writing a newsletter when I wasn’t sure if I had anything worth saying.

And to everyone who has been reading since then, swipe for some words for you and stay tuned for news about upcoming in-person events. Book available at my link in bio 💚

celebrating Atmos Volume 10: Afterlife ✨

thank you to every person who poured their heart and soul into this issue, and who came out last night to celebrate it. especially thank you to one of our cover stars @norihito_ishii who flew in for an incredibly moving butoh performance, @tomjohnsonstudio for telling us the story behind the shoot, and to my dear friend @oyinda for providing an otherworldly soundtrack for the evening.

and of course to the @atmos team without whom none of this would be possible, especially my cofounder @jakesarge. here’s to five years, and many more to come.

waste is a huge theme of our new issue, and i wanted that reflected in my look for the night. the stunning @collinastrada dress i wore is made entirely from the natural waste of rose bushes and stems, and the pattern is based on mold. in other words, perfect.

if you’re subscribed to my newsletter, you can read my full speech from the night in your inbox. and if you’re not then you probably should be! (link in biology)

It’s a mad world.

Going down the rabbit hole refers to finding oneself in a confusing situation or nonsensical environment. What can real-life rabbits teach us about navigating pandemonium?

In this week’s edition of The Overview, @willowonearth looks to these animals for how to survive in times of peril.

What comes next?

Throughout time, humanity has wondered what comes after death. In the natural world, nothing ever truly disappears. Matter constantly decomposes and reconstitutes in new shapes, serving new purposes.

In this week’s special edition of The Overview, @willowonearth introduces our latest print edition, Atmos Volume 10: Afterlife: a meditation on waste, upcycling, composting, and rebirth.

Order your copy from Monday December 2nd.

Like the salamander, we are all tasked with living in two worlds.

Our amphibious relatives live a double life—thriving on land and in the water. Capable of growing new limbs and breathing through their skin, they’re perfectly adapted to moving between environments.

In this week’s edition of The Overview, @willowonearth looks to newts and other amphibians for how we too can bridge between the world we live in today and the one we dream of for the future.

Debunking the ‘but biology’ argument used against trans people.

I wasn’t planning on making this my post on Trans Day of Remembrance but the news about bathrooms on Capitol Hill this week pushed me to record this. As someone who has a foot in the scientific world, it always frustrates me to see people use biology as an argument against trans people when the study of life reveals all kinds of diversity and variation when it comes to s3x. 🌎🏳️‍⚧️

We need to transcend binary thinking.

Everything eventually makes way for its opposite. In our world, politically, socially, economically, and environmentally, we see these divides. So how can we cultivate thinking that opens up space for possibility—and solutions?

As the reality of Project 25 and a president-elect who made campaign promises to target gender-affirming care for trans youth (and people of any age) sets in, I’m reminded of these words by @anohni from the foreword she wrote for my book, ‘The Overview.’

My community has found ways to unfurl its wings against society’s wishes for much of history, and will continue to do so no matter what may come. We will save us, as we always have.

The work continues.

The results of the presidential election left many across the U.S. feeling shock, despair, and hopelessness. But as the tree of life reminds us, we are all interconnected. The work we put in today will continue to feed into ourselves, each other, and our environment for tomorrow and beyond.

In this week’s edition of The Overview, @willowonearth issues a sobering reminder: we don’t get to give up on life on Earth.
