This week marks one year I’ve been without my beautiful mama and 22 years without my baba ❤️
Losing a parent comes with such unimaginable pain, at any age but for me, that pain feels especially intense when you are young because there are so many experiences that will have been stolen. I long for the past, the present and the future.
I wish I could hug you both one more time. I wish I could show you my ceramics, I wish I could make you something, anything. I wish I could speak to you about HUG. I wish I could hear you call me by my name. I wish you could meet my new friends. I wish I could have taken you to Wimbledon mama. I wish baba could have known me past the age of 8. I wish he could have taught me how to drive. I remember him taking us to car parks at night to teach us to ride bikes. I remember him buying me and Mohammed our first tennis racquets. I remember he loved to make us laugh. I remember so much and I don’t ever want to forget, I just want to learn to be ok with remembering.
Loving you and knowing that you loved me and were proud of me is what keeps me going and keeps me strong. I’m still learning to survive without you both by my side. At age 30 I feel like my life has yet to begin and yet I have to spend the rest of it without you both and that scares me.
A lot of people assume grieving is just crying but it is so much more that. Its waking up at 3am in pain and not being able to go back to sleep. Its forgetting your keys, forgetting plans, forgetting to text people back. Its abandoning your food shopping. Its not speaking to anyone for days. Its thinking that you’re not good enough, its being scared that you’re bothering people. Its going to sleep at 8pm because you need a break from your thoughts.
Thank you to everyone who has managed to make me smile and feel loved. It’s such a beautiful thing to make someone, anyone, feel loved. The world needs more care. As humans all we truly long for is to feel loved and I love to love.
Love deeply, endlessly and selflessly.

I thought it was important for me address the racism I have faced since creating my in Arabic we say series for the sake of those enduring similar experiences in their daily lives that might find these books as healing as they are to me. I’m sending so much love and warmth to those who have lasting internal scars due to racism and those who have ever had to cope with racial discrimination ❤️
