@montezpressradio. I’m thrilled to be joined live by Jeff Place, Curator and Senior Archivist of Smithsonian Folkways/Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives
@smithsonianfolkways.
The Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections are global in perspective, covering world ethnic performance traditions, spoken word recordings, sounds of science and nature, occupational folklore, and family folklore. The Rinzler Archives houses the Moses and Frances Asch Collection, which was named to UNESCO’s Memory of the World International Register in 2015. Since then, the archives have added the recordings from the Paredon, Cook, Dyer-Bennet, Fast Folk, and Monitor record labels that together make up Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. The archives also includes the written, audio, and visual records the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage.
Jeff Place has been the archivist for the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections since January 1988. He has been involved in the compilation of over 60 CDs of American music for Smithsonian Folkways Recordings including the Lead Belly Legacy Series, Lead Belly Sings for Children, the Pete Seeger American Favorite Ballads, The Lead Belly Legacy Series, and the Asch Recordings of Woody Guthrie. Place has been nominated for ten Grammy Awards and twelve Indie Awards, winning three Grammies and five Indies. He was on the curatorial team for number of exhibits and served as a consultant to several museums. He co-curated the 2003 Smithsonian Folklife Festival program on Appalachian culture. He has been a collector of traditional music for over 55 years.
Some Things Last Forever is a monthly show that spotlights niche archives through conversations with the archivists who run them. Each episode unpacks the art of archiving, the importance of preserving obscure corners of culture, and the impact of archive on memory, education, creation, and information exchange.
