I played a Barter 6 track and an Enya/Prodigy mashup in the same show, so I’m feeling very spiritually fulfilled. Thank you for having me @thelotradio :)

If your main circle isn’t discussing how to float down, hike to, or splish splash in various bodies of water, then it’s time to find a new circle. Your network is your net worth 💦

Had the privilege of spending time in the mountains with a very old friend during the precious days leading up to her wedding. No better way to mark a life milestone than with an alpine dip.

Tune in tonight for another episode of Some Things Last Forever, live on @montezpressradio from 6-7pm est. I’m thrilled to be joined by Andrew Beccone, founder of the Reanimation Library @reanimationlibrary.

I was a frequent visitor at the Reanimation Library when the collection lived at Pioneer Books in Gowanus, so I’m thrilled to speak with Andrew about the project.

The Reanimation Library is both an artist project and a functioning research library with an emphasis on visual information. The collection opened to the public in 2006 at Proteus Gowanus in Brooklyn, where it was housed until 2015. In 2015, the library was selected to participate in the Queens Museum Studio Program’s two-year residency, where it was located until the fall of 2017, when it moved to Pioneer Books in Red Hook, Brooklyn. At the end of 2018, the library lost its home, was put into storage, and is currently on indefinite hiatus.

Some Things Last Forever spotlights niche archives through conversations with the archivists who run them. Each episode unpacks the art of archiving, the importance of preserving obscure corners of culture, and the impact of archive on memory, education, creation, and information exchange.

Tune into the live conversation on radio.montezpress.com tonight, Saturday, May 25th, at 6pm EST 🔊

Tune in tonight for the third installment of Some Things Last Forever on @montezpressradio. I’m thrilled to be joined live by Jeff Place, Curator and Senior Archivist of Smithsonian Folkways/Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives @smithsonianfolkways.

The Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections are global in perspective, covering world ethnic performance traditions, spoken word recordings, sounds of science and nature, occupational folklore, and family folklore. The Rinzler Archives houses the Moses and Frances Asch Collection, which was named to UNESCO’s Memory of the World International Register in 2015. Since then, the archives have added the recordings from the Paredon, Cook, Dyer-Bennet, Fast Folk, and Monitor record labels that together make up Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. The archives also includes the written, audio, and visual records the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage.

Jeff Place has been the archivist for the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections since January 1988. He has been involved in the compilation of over 60 CDs of American music for Smithsonian Folkways Recordings including the Lead Belly Legacy Series, Lead Belly Sings for Children, the Pete Seeger American Favorite Ballads, The Lead Belly Legacy Series, and the Asch Recordings of Woody Guthrie. Place has been nominated for ten Grammy Awards and twelve Indie Awards, winning three Grammies and five Indies. He was on the curatorial team for number of exhibits and served as a consultant to several museums. He co-curated the 2003 Smithsonian Folklife Festival program on Appalachian culture. He has been a collector of traditional music for over 55 years.
