meets @baloji 💫 Victor Pelenda (@afrofuturiste), aged 26, works as a stylist and costume designer, which recently gave him the opportunity to attend the Cannes Film Festival for Tran Anh Hung’s The Passion of Dodin Bouffant as an assistant. Amidst the prestigious event, where Baloji’s debut feature film, Augure, competed in Un certain regard category, Victor, intrigued by the work of the artist, seized the chance to witness it firsthand. The film’s exploration of themes like religion, sexuality, mixed marriages, gender dynamics, and parental pressures resonated deeply with Victor, particularly because of its setting in the Democratic Republic of Congo, his country of origin. Life, however, has a way of surprising us. A year later, while returning from a Parisian party, Victor unexpectedly crossed paths with a friend of a friend who happened to be Baloji’s press officer. Learning of Victor’s interest, she suggested arranging a meeting with the filmmaker through a media outlet. Victor promptly thought of Draft001 to publish this interview.
