Our new post at davidkingdesigner.com explores King’s work as a designer of album covers and music graphics. Shown here is his second sleeve for Electric Ladyland (Track Records, 1968) by the Jimi Hendrix Experience – the double-album was quickly split into two discs and sold separately; this is Part 1. I owned a copy as a teenager in the 1970s. I had no idea then who David King was, of course. King’s early photomontage still looks like a remarkable invention, a slice of surreal science-fiction psychedelia that is totally of its time, using a postcard image of the actress Mae West as the Statue of Liberty and duplicates of the Chrysler Building in New York.
