Installation shots of "David King: The World Must Change" at Standpoint Gallery, London. Curated by Rick Poynor with design by Simon Esterson. We've had a great response to the exhibition so far. This is a rare opportunity to see King's high-impact posters as they were intended to be seen – on the wall. We also have his famous covers of City Limits magazine. There are posters for sale.

The exhibition runs until 22 October. Full details in the gallery link in bio. [Photos: Simon Esterson]

We’ve been using the summer to load davidkingdesigner.com with 13 hard-to-find articles both by and about David King from publications such as Blueprint, Crafts and Creative Review – with more to follow. The portrait-based covers shown here are illustrations from some of the pieces. Special note: the London Review of Books portrait of art critic David Sylvester is by King, who was no mean photographer. To access the articles and see and read more: LINK in BIO

A little-seen David King project: spreads from My Life in Pictures, a pictorial autobiography by Charlie Chaplin, published by The Bodley Head in 1974. It was one of King’s earliest book design projects, but the techniques of impactful picture editing, narrative construction, acute visual pacing and expressive montage that distinguished his later books as author are already in place. Chaplin was a 20th-century global superstar and keen Chaplin fans will probably know the book. See many more pictures and read about the project in a new post at davidkingdesigner.com: link in BIO

David King's first poster for the Central Institute of Adult Education, London, 1982. The graphic image is one of his most painterly. He had been attracted to abstract painting as a student in the early 1960s and later produced his own abstract paintings, though not this geometrical and hard-edged.

Poster by David King for the Anti-Nazi League, an anti-racist organisation, 1978. The photograph shows Jews being rounded up by Nazi soldiers in Warsaw in 1943. The poster won a prize at the 7th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw “for reminding the world about these terrible and unfortunately true historical facts”. See more posters and documents in a new article at davidkingdesigner.com about the international design competitions that King entered in the late 1970s and 1980s. LINK in BIO

An American copy of Jimi Hendrix’s first album, Reprise Records, 1967. Cover design by David King & Roger Law, friends and colleagues at the Sunday Times Magazine. For a short while in the 1960s, before he found his direction, King was a high-profile album cover designer. See the latest post about his designs for music at davidkingdesigner.com: LINK IN BIO.

Our new post at davidkingdesigner.com explores King’s work as a designer of album covers and music graphics. Shown here is his second sleeve for Electric Ladyland (Track Records, 1968) by the Jimi Hendrix Experience – the double-album was quickly split into two discs and sold separately; this is Part 1. I owned a copy as a teenager in the 1970s. I had no idea then who David King was, of course. King’s early photomontage still looks like a remarkable invention, a slice of surreal science-fiction psychedelia that is totally of its time, using a postcard image of the actress Mae West as the Statue of Liberty and duplicates of the Chrysler Building in New York. To see a lot more images and read the article, follow the LINK IN BIO.

New blog post at davidkingdesigner.com: Rick Poynor interviews Judy Groves about David King. Judy was a close friend and worked with David on many of his projects in the late 1970s and 1980s. As Judy recalls, he was highly focused, often extreme in the positions he took and a total perfectionist when it came to the work. Read more of Judy's insights: LINK IN BIO
