Dear beloved guest,

We offer ourselves on a plate, and we offer you the plate itself. A coming together of mud and water and fire. A gluttonous gorging of slurry, slip, grog and glaze.
Breaking bread and biscuit over mutual eccentricity, we extrude this feast for the eyes. We craft
this just for you, with your taste in mind, with your flavour on our collective tongue. Please use our
dysfunctional vessels, crockery and cutlery. Consume our glost clay and chew on it’s opulent
inedibility. We invite you to a ritual of the palate, a savouring of our mutual flavour. Partake in this
obscene scene in which we are no where to be seen. Pour yourself a generous helping of
indulgence and bask in the aftermath of our debauchery. You will not be disappointed by the lack
of company. Perhaps the devil will come to dine, or Jesus or Judy Chicago? This will not be our
last supper, we can promise you that.
Let them eat fake.

Selflessly,

The Altruistic Artist

Thank you to everyone who came out for the launch of ‘There is nothing old under the sun,’ a special publication accompanying the eponymous exhibition by Steph Huang.

The event included a panel discussion with the artist alongside arts writer Ellen Mara De Wachter, Professor Allan Walker, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Dean of the School of Arts, Media, and Creative Technology at the University of Salford; and Stephanie Fletcher, Assistant Curator of the University of Salford Art Collection, with moderation by esea contemporary Curator Jo-Lene Ong

Designed by Huang’s frequent collaborator, Leslie Chang, the English-Chinese bilingual book invites readers into Huang’s visual explorations and conceptual journeys, centred on a mode of drifting. It features images of Huang’s artworks and original photographs, alongside writings from esea contemporary’s Director Xiaowen Zhu, Jo-Lene Ong, Ellen Mara De Wachter and the artist.

‘There is nothing old under the sun’ is published by esea contemporary in a strictly limited edition — get your copy from our online shop via the link in bio.

The publication has been created through generous support from the Henry Moore Foundation, Public Gallery, Arts Council England, and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.

Final few days to visit! Ends Saturday.

Denise de Cordova
Rocks Remember & Other Stories

De Cordova’s work plays with ambiguities – there is a tension between notions of surface embellishment being at odds with what lies beneath. By grouping and regrouping objects, her narratives adapt fluidly to different environments.

Within their fabricated forms and painted surfaces, de Cordova’s sculptures hold allusions to many literary genres, from magical realism, landscape writing and classical novels, to ancient myth and folklore tales. She describes the work as the embodiment of real and imagined space, a nexus for lived experience, re-readings, and collected stories.

De Cordova has consistently explored ideas through the prism of female figurative forms that carry reiterated motifs: rocks, rauks, gogottes, stones, sticks – objects that imply women’s burdens, but also innate and transgressive power, where non-human sentience is valued as kinship.

Rocks Remember and Other Stories presents work developed from recent solitary forest walks in British Columbia, Canada, and a summer residency at The British School Of Rome, where de Cordova extended research into Cybele, who had a dual role as goddess of civilisation’s order and nature’s chaos, and who came to earth in the form of a meteorite.

Denise de Cordova is represented by Eagle Gallery / EMH Arts, London.

Denise de Cordova’s current exhibition Rocks Remember (and Other Stories) at Standpoint Gallery is layered with ideas from ancient cultures expressed in forms that are distinctively her own. The Watcher of High Space, 2021-24, carries a strong sense of portent. The figure (whose hairstyle and dress suggest motifs from early Anatolian traditions) is surrounded by a fall of meteorite rocks. She gesticulates to the sky. It would appear in recent days that our warnings should be about things more earth bound - we could certainly benefit from a few goddesses descending from the heavens!
