Wishing a happy birthday to Ed Ruscha (@edruschaofficial), who was born on this day, December 16, in Omaha, Nebraska! The artist is pictured here with his mural “Extremes and In-betweens in Two Languages” (“Extremos e Intermedios en dos Lenguajes”), which has been installed at the new US Embassy in Mexico City, a multibuilding complex on an 8.5-acre site in the Nuevo Polanco district.

Ruscha’s work was inspired by his painting “Galaxy, U.S.A., Dot” (2016), in which spatial concepts are stacked on top of one another in diminishing scale, echoing the relation of macrocosm to microcosm. For the installation in Mexico, Ruscha added an inverse Spanish translation. The text is formatted in the now familiar typeface of his own design, which he has referred to as “Boy Scout utility modern.” Follow the link in our bio to learn more.
