“There is in nature a limitless variety of shapes and rhythms from which the sculptor can enlarge his form-knowledge experience.”
—Henry Moore

Gagosian is pleased to announce “Moore and Malaparte: Rhythm and Form,” an exhibition of small-scale sculptures and drawings by Henry Moore in dialogue with three pieces of furniture from Casa Malaparte, two of them exclusive designs. Opening on January 22 at Gagosian, rue de Castiglione, Paris, the presentation draws unexpected connections between sculptor and designer, including a fascination with crafting organic forms in tune with the natural world and an immersion in the interaction of these objects with their architectural settings. “The Street,” an exhibition curated by Peter Doig (@peterdoig), closes today, December 18, at Gagosian, 980 Madison Avenue, New York. The show takes Balthus’s remarkable 1933 painting “The Street”—generously loaned by the Museum of Modern Art in New York (@themuseumofmodernart)—as its point of departure.

Here, Doig considers the works on view in the lower level, including Edward Burra’s “Beelzebub” (c. 1937) and Max Beckmann’s “Hölle der Vögel” (“Birds’ Hell,” 1937–38), and the sense of danger and violence that they suggest. Follow the link in our bio to watch a full interview with Doig on “Gagosian Quarterly.”

An exhibition of new paintings by Katharina Grosse (@katharina_grosse), titled “Pie Sell, Lee Slip, Eel Lips,” closes this Saturday, December 21, at Gagosian, Park, & 75, New York.

Grosse uses a compressor-driven spray gun to apply industrial paints directly onto landscapes, architecture, objects, and panels. This tool extends her reach and accelerates her gestures, balancing impulsiveness with intent. In her studio outside Berlin, she produces works on canvas in a practice that is consistent with the spontaneous flow of her improvisational, performative process. This video captures the opening of Takashi Murakami’s solo exhibition of new paintings, “Japanese Art History à la Takashi Murakami,” at the Grosvenor Hill gallery, as well as his concurrent presentation at Gagosian, Burlington Arcade, and takeover of Gagosian Shop.

Murakami kicked off his Shop takeover with the release of two hundred limited-edition T-shirts, while the Burlington Arcade marked the occasion with multi-colored lighting. During the opening reception at Grosvenor Hill, Murakami signed copies of “An Arrow through History,” a new catalogue documenting the 2022 exhibition of the same title at Gagosian New York, which comes with a trading card designed by the artist. “Frost,” an exhibition of new abstract paintings by Sabine Moritz (@sabine_moritz_r), closes this Saturday, December 21, at Gagosian, Beverly Hills.

In these works, overlapping brushstrokes are allied with chromatic contrasts in improvised compositions. Searching for primal sensory experience, Moritz avoids preliminary sketching, confronting the viewer instead with an unmediated dialogue between color and gesture that addresses recollection and history in a consciously oblique, ambiguous manner. Follow the link in our bio to learn more.

The works on paper exhibited in Gstaad were completed this year, developing previous motifs and introducing new ones. Anna Weyant’s exhibition of seven new paintings, titled “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolves,” closes this Friday, December 20, at Gagosian, Davies Street in London.

In “Girl in Window,” the subject’s breasts are glimpsed through a small window, her head and shoulders covered by a fabric blind. A vine curls around the edge of the portal, one heartshaped leaf shielding the left nipple like a fig leaf on a classical statue. There is a surreal charge to such semiotic shifts and withdrawals that is consistent with the fairy-tale reference of the exhibition’s title, and that resonates with Weyant’s previous works, especially eerie depictions of dollhouses. Wishing a happy birthday to Ed Ruscha (@edruschaofficial), who was born on this day, December 16, in Omaha, Nebraska! The artist is pictured here with his mural “Extremes and In-betweens in Two Languages” (“Extremos e Intermedios en dos Lenguajes”), which has been installed at the new US Embassy in Mexico City, a multibuilding complex on an 8.5-acre site in the Nuevo Polanco district.

Ruscha’s work was inspired by his painting “Galaxy, U.S.A., Dot” (2016), in which spatial concepts are stacked on top of one another in diminishing scale, echoing the relation of macrocosm to microcosm. For the installation in Mexico, Ruscha added an inverse Spanish translation. The text is formatted in the now familiar typeface of his own design, which he has referred to as “Boy Scout utility modern.” Follow the link in our bio to learn more.

Wishing a happy birthday to Ellen Gallagher, who was born on this day, December 16, in Providence, Rhode Island! On the occasion, we’re revisiting this Session in which pianist and composer Jason Moran (@thejasonmoran) performs a contemporary jazz reinterpretation of the 1919 song “All of No Man’s Land Is Ours” inside Gallagher’s solo exhibition of the same title at the Stedelijk Museum (@stedelijkmuseum), Amsterdam.

The exhibition—which was presented from December 2, 2023, to March 10, 2024—reflects the diversity of the artist’s practice in which painting, cut and carved rubber, crumpled notebook papers, and metal beaten to an airy thinness intertwine in a dynamic relationship. Watch the full performance via the link in our bio.
