Sednaya Prison, also spelled Saydnaya, was among the prisons liberated as rebel forces in Syria seized the capital from longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad, who was reported to have fled the country for Moscow. Believed to be a location where thousands of people were detained and tortured by the Assad regime over the last decade, families soon poured into the prison to find information about detained and missing relatives. Syria has been mired in a multi-party civil war since 2011, sparked by the Arab Spring uprisings. I December 13-14, 2024 I Photos by Chris McGrath
