Alida Freding, 19, from Stockholm, plays the role of Lucia as she leads the procession during the Swedish Sankta Lucia Festival of Light service at York Minster in York, England. The Sankta Lucia service, featuring the Chorus Pictor Choir, is a traditional Swedish service combining pagan and Christian traditions. The service, which celebrates the bringing of light during the dark days of winter, celebrates Saint Lucy, a Sicilian girl martyred for her Christian faith in the early fourth century, whose story reached Sweden with the spread of Christianity. Sednaya Prison, also spelled Saydnaya, was among the prisons liberated as rebel forces in Syria seized the capital from longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad, who was reported to have fled the country for Moscow. Believed to be a location where thousands of people were detained and tortured by the Assad regime over the last decade, families soon poured into the prison to find information about detained and missing relatives. Syria has been mired in a multi-party civil war since 2011, sparked by the Arab Spring uprisings. 1-4) People carry the coffin of Mazen al-Hamada during a funeral for the Syrian activist on December 12 in Damascus. Rebel forces who seized the capital this weekend said they found Hamada's body in the morgue at Sednaya prison, where it is assumed he was killed shortly before the prison's liberation and the collapse of the Assad regime. Hamada was detained and tortured during the uprising of 2011 and released in 2013, when he received asylum in the Netherlands. In a development that confused friends and family, he returned to Syria in 2020 and disappeared soon after.

Actors dressed in Krampus costumes roam the village center during the annual Krampus parade in Seefeld, Austria. 30 Krampus associations from Austria, South Tyrol and Switzerland are participating this year. Krampus, in Tyrol also called Tuifl, is a demon-like creature represented by a fearsome, hand-carved wooden mask with animal horns, a suit made from sheep or goat skin and large cow bells attached to the waist that the wearer rings by running or shaking his hips up and down. Krampus has been a part of Central European alpine folklore going back at least a millennium. Since the 17th-century Krampus traditionally accompanies St. Nicholas and angels on the evening of December 5 to visit households to reward children that have been good while reprimanding those who have not. However, in the last few decades Tyrol in particular has seen the founding of numerous village Krampus associations with up to 100 members each who parade without St. Nicholas at Krampus events throughout November and early December. l December 6, 2024 l Photos by Philipp Guelland l #GettyImagesNews #Krampus #Tradition #Austria
