On Brazil’s Open Landfills for Atmos. These images were taken in the landfills of Cajazeiras, Pombal, and Afogados da Ingazeira, Brazil. Thank you to everyone who allowed me to photograph them. Please go read the article!

The first and last images are from a landfill in the small town of Afogados da Ingazeira which has now been shut down. Fortunately, there the local government has initiated a program that helps the recycling workers with monthly payments until they have been able to find work or are placed in a work position found by the city council. The issue is that this seems to be a rare case in this region of Brazil, where many workers fear the closure of the landfills because they won't be able to find work after. @nicolefroio talks more about this in the article on Atmos’ website. Images were taken in Afogados da Ingazeira and Cajazeiras, Brazil.

A few months back, I was sent on an assignment for Atmos to document the open landfills that still exist in the northeast of Brazil. This was something I had wanted to document more of ever since I had a quick opportunity to do so last year. I felt there was a story that wasn't being told in the way that I saw. These images show a little bit of that. Nicole Froio also wrote an excellent and informative article to accompany these images that is on Atmos’ website. Thank you to Barbara, who helped me with this story by interviewing some of the workers. And thank you, Daphne, for allowing me to do this story as I saw fit.

Não sou religioso mas crescendo no Pernambuco convivia com a religião todos os dias com minha vó que sempre me levava para igreja. Algo que eu queria mostrar desde o começo era isso, a religião e sua grande influência nas pessoas dessa região do Brasil. As fotos que eu tiro muitas vezes tem um pouco de mim nelas, em relação do que eu já vi ou passei. Quando entrei dentro da casa acima e vi os quadros de todas essa figuras religiosas lembrei de memórias perdidas. Mas algo que fazia muito tempo que não via era uma estátua do Padre Cícero, que andava por essas terras quando estava indo ou voltando de Juazeiro do Norte. Ibitiranga, Pernambuco.
