I made these etched heart crystals a while ago. I took the photo on my cell phone 📲 of my friends smoking hookah and giving each other a shottie. We staged the shoot after this photo I found on the internet (slide 3). The voyeurism, objectification, fetishism, eroticism etc., etc. is all intentional. I hate spelling it out but I think it’s lost on a lot of people. It’s sitting on a mini drug scale, hidden/balancing under a mask. A bugged out Chinese parade mask I found in the ceiling of my Chinatown studio when we were demolishing/renovating the space. There’s some meaning in that too. It is red-lit, and showcased under the boxing glove/Cheshire cat peice. Both red, brooding and sexualized. Both pieces playing with transparency and reflection. And these pieces all interact / talk to eachother. The hood chinese menu also plays with light and is on transparent vellum. Balanced on beds of nails. There’s body, glitter and blood splatter on the big painting too. I think @studioroosi ‘s identity as a collective has always been so clear to me. In their agenda and demeanor. They showcase voices that are underepresented, unheard of, and meld them together beautifully, proudly. Which is something that their home base of Queens (roosi ➡️ Roosevelt Ave) uniquely boasts. They embody that energy fully. The intersection of all these cultures, ones that are so familiar to us, was something I wanted to dance with and celebrate too.
