The Amazon’s Future is Rooted in #IndigenousEducation! ✊

A’i #Cofan leader Wider Guarameg from Ecuador shares his frontlines perspective on decolonizing education in the Upper Amazon. In a historic victory, the children of Sinangoe recently won a landmark case against the Ecuadorian Government over the violation of their right to education.

For over six years, Sinangoe's children have been denied proper educational infrastructure and teaching materials, while government authorities failed to support their community-driven, culturally relevant education model.

Read our interview with Wider to learn about Sinangoe’s fight for justice and the critical role of Indigenous education in shaping the Amazon’s future.

🔊Turn up the sound & listen to this heartfelt song by #IndigenousStoryteller, @milenapiaguaje about her sacred homeland.

As a child, #Siekopai youth leader Milena Piaguaje believed her ancestral territory could only be reached through the visions of yagé (ayahuasca).

Then, one day, during a long canoe journey, her mother woke her and her three siblings—they had arrived at Pë'këya, the homeland of their people on the Ecuador-Peru border.

🎶@milenapiaguaje shares the lyrics of her beautiful song translated from her native language, Paicoca:

I'm happy to step into the territory of my elders
but sometimes it makes me sad that,
because of the State,
we had to divide ourselves.
Now we are dispersed. Pë'këya is where my elders
drank yagé (ayahuasca).
Because of the State, we had to divide ourselves.
Now we young people know that Pë'këya is the great house
of our elders.

#Indigenouswomen have been guardians and #defenders of the land long before environmental awareness became a global priority.

Strengthening their autonomy through traditional and ancestral practices is fundamental for the survival of their cultures.

A prominent example of empowerment and development along these lines is the Women’s School of Leadership and Entrepreneurship. The school, developed in collaboration with the @AlianzaCeibo and Amazon Frontlines, works with members of Indigenous communities to strengthen their capacity for entrepreneurship and to provide them with leadership tools.

Opened in April 2023, this school has provided women of the #Siekopai, A’I #Cofán, and #Siona nations with opportunities to demonstrate how they can become agents of change in their communities by recognizing their importance for territorial defense and community governance.

Women’s participation in decision-making is strengthened, making them a crucial force in the fight against environmental destruction.

We reaffirm our commitment to their struggle. We join our voice with theirs so that they can continue to weave stories of resistance intertwined with the defense of their territories!

Tell Ecuador’s President @DanielNoboaOk: Hands off Indigenous territories in the #AmazonRainforest!

The #Waorani communities of Pastaza are fiercely denouncing a new oil auction threatening their territory once again.

Back in 2019, the Waorani won a historic lawsuit against the Ecuadorian Government, protecting half a million acres of biodiverse rainforest from oil drilling. Now, the Ecuadorian Governments is getting ready to launch a new oil auction for oil exploration in the Amazon without Indigenous peoples’ consent.

The Amazon is in danger, and #IndigenousPeoples have the right to decide over the future of their #rainforest territories. It is vital that we support their struggle!

Take action now by signing the Waorani’s letter to demand @cconstitucionalecu Judge Richard Ortiz convoke an urgent hearing in Waorani territory and uphold Indigenous peoples’ right to free, prior, and informed consent #FPIC.

Another win for #LandBack in the Amazon Rainforest! The Siekopai People in #Peru have won a major court battle against the Peruvian Government, recovering over 300,000 acres of their biodiverse forests!

Existing laws in Peru designate the majority of Indigenous territories as government property, violating internationally recognized rights to ancestral lands. But through persistent organizing and resistance, the #Siekopai have made history, overturning this colonial legislation and setting a powerful precedent for #IndigenousPeoples across Peru and beyond.

This victory comes on the heels of a court victory recovering their homeland in #Ecuador one year ago. It marks another major milestone in the Siekopai’s struggle to reclaim their lands in Peru and Ecuador after centuries of violence, dispossession, and erasure.

Read more about the Siekopai’s latest triumph by visiting the link in our bio.

In this clip, young #Siekopai storyteller @MilenaPiaguaje talks of Wateja’ko, a female jaguar figure in Siekopai culture. Wateja’ko is a very powerful entity, capable of transfixing human beings, causing them to fall in love with her.

The elders teach that one must be very careful with Wateja’ko: connecting to the spirit of jaguars requires a delicate balance. If the bond is too intense, a person may lose themselves and devour others. But if the connection is made carefully, jaguar spirits can provide enormous amounts of strength.
