📘 Shantaram – This book is an autobiography with a bit of poetic licence. Gregory David Roberts tells the tale of his escape from prison in Australia, fleeing to Bombay and his dealings with the Indian mafia. The vivid writing, coupled with the rich details of his experiences in vibrant Indian culture and the warmth and openness of the people he encounters, will leave you wanting to immediately book a flight.

We're helping combat the dreaded "what shall we watch?" with AMVers sharing what they've recently watched to give you some inspo. Today, we hear from our Assistant Producer Meg Ravenhall…
🎞️ “I must admit, I am probably a little late to the game with this one, but having recently found myself down a Disaster Movie rabbit hole, “The Impossible” has to be one of the films which really stuck out to me the most.
Based on the tragedy of the Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004, Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts and a 16-year-old Tom Holland (who still looks exactly the same might I add…) are swept away by a tidal wave which would go on to kill nearly 230,000 people. The narrative follows the true story of María Belón and her family when the Asian Tsunami hits the resort they are staying at in Khao Lak. What unravels is a story of two parts, that of Holland and Watts as they fight to stay alive (and afloat), and that of McGregor who is forced to make a choice - stay with his other two sons or trust in the good of strangers and send them to safety whilst he remains searching for his wife and eldest son alone.
Not for the faint hearted, this is a heartbreakingly beautiful retelling of an event which took the lives of so many innocent people. With scenes which can be incredibly difficult to watch, director J. A. Bayona refrains from stylising or romanticising the storytelling, rather, he stays true to the horrific aftermath and brutal reality of what occurred making it a gripping and incredibly moving watch.”
