ANNA KUEN Anna Kuen (born 1991 in Bavaria) works and lives in Berlin. From 2012-2019 she studied at the Academy for Fine Arts Vienna, ‚expanded pictorial space, in the class of Daniel Richter. Kuen’s abstract paintings form a body of work which combine high-contrast color compositions, angular and organic structures and realistic details, with many of them referring to the nature she grew up in close to the German Alps. The artist is perpetually connecting to the motives and mythologies of the impressive surroundings of her early days, almost like a spiritual practice. She is intuitively oscillating between abstraction and figuration, much like nature itself. Through structures, colors and series she is exploring the in-between, which always remains somewhat unfathomable. Kuen’s paintings are searching for something sublimely and bigger than us. In the echoes of former representations and fragments lies the potential of a unique experience of its own, an experience possibly connecting to your earliest memories, a meditative state or someplace entirely different and new. She describes her artistic process as follows: „The topic of a new series usually comes up in the process, while I am painting the first one or two paintings. I do very rough sketches in a sketch book. I also write. I keep a diary of thoughts, poems, single sentences – sometimes only one word – always before I start painting. It is a ritual for me to start my work in the studio. ...“ Anna Kuen depicts an image by resolving its elements, letting our sight get caught in small abstract details so we can put them back together by looking from a distance, seeing it in its whole figurative composition. With multilayered paintings and through the accumulation of forms, she captures contradictions like longing and distance, which humans in civilized urban societies experience in the face of nature. In Kuen’s work, mountains serve as metaphors for making sense of our human existence since they seem to prevail throughout the centuries. #AnnaKuen #THESPACE #perceptions #Hamburg
