I am privileged to announce a photoshoot that has been kept secret for over a year. It was an opportunity that I could have never deserved, no matter how hard I tried. I am humbled to say that I did a Photoshoot at the Edge of Space. With the support of the many incredible men and women at Beale Air Force Base, I put on a spacesuit, climbed into the back of a U2 Dragon Lady, and rocketed up over 70,000 feet from the Earth. All while being chased by a second spy plane to the blackness above and witnessing the curvature of the beautiful Earth down below. It was a journey that began eight years prior and resulted in me being able to do a photoshoot while simultaneously being the furthest person from the planet (other than those on the ISS). To those who helped support me, keep me alive, and gave me an ear to talk to when I was scared, I will never be able to say thank you enough. Some will choose to look at this for the history of it all, but for me, it will always remain a love letter to my daughter, telling her that truly anything is possible. @bealeafb

This is the train image that kicked off the entire series. Who knew that standing on rock piles next to train tracks for hours on end would result in images that have made so many people happy? Whether you like trains, or just enjoy seeing what kind of crazy creations come out of my boredom, I want you to know how much I sincerely appreciate it. In the coming weeks there will be new train images that I haven’t released, so stay tuned…

It’s not often a car makes me stop and stare for a minute, but this is one of the exceptions. Michael Schumacher’s F300. I can still hear the scream of the V10 echoing around the track, gone in a flash of red as he flies by. Sitting in the “Bread Van’ outside of the hangar as the U2 was being prepared was the last time I let myself be scared. It was a moment that I had planned for, and when I stood up to walk out to the U2, I mentally focused on one step at a time as I entered the Dragon’s Lair. Imagine feeling like a doctor being prepped for surgery by your team… You hold your hands out, and they put on the gloves and lock the O-rings. Then, you put on your space helmet. Once they lock down the visor, they lay you back, and the team dives into all the facets of the suit: locking things down, testing pressures, and attaching spurs to your shoes. At that moment, you realize you were never the doctor, but the patient, and this team is working hard to keep you safe. It’s a moment as terrifying as it is inspiring. The Photoshoot at the Edge of Space involved trust, risk, and a promise - a promise I made to the Spacesuit squadron while I was being integrated into my suit for my flight above 70,000 feet. My promise was simple: I would return to Earth and photograph them to show everyone what they did to keep me alive. Unfortunately, fate had other plans. The altitude I soared to caused short-term memory loss, and the conversation faded away. Weeks later, the promise I made returned to me, and so I headed to the base to keep my word. For me, it meant the opportunity to thank those in the squadron for helping me achieve something incredible.
