Last night was an absolute dream come true 🥲 Thanks to @cafewha for a heaping helping of hospitality. Huge props to my friends @oliviaellenlloyd & @jondellmusic for fantastic sets and all the gratitude for letting an upstate fella join the big city fun 🙏🙏🙏 if you haven’t sampled their stellar songwriting go to your nearest internet connection and change that right gd now And the biggest thanks of all to everyone that packed the house at @cafewha (in the midst of Santa Con no less! 🎅😵‍💫) and made it a night I will remember for decades to come. You ever heard of relationship OCD? I was diagnosed with it a couple of years ago after I told my therapist that my intense fear of abandonment caused me to act in ways I didn’t agree with. Basically it means that my brain (or my ego/inner child, more specifically) feels the need to work around the clock to identify and protect against every possible opportunity for the people closest to me—my romantic partner, most of all—to abandon me. I’ve found lots of tools to cope and am much better these days but in the past these spiraling investigations of my worth vs my partners propensity for loyalty were utterly unraveling. For both of us. Heres a peek of a song written from that place that’ll be coming out next year on the second Heat Lightning 🔥 ⚡️ album but Real Ones™️ can gon’ head and get the full song demo from my Bandcamp page (link in the you know what). Some songs get old. It’s natural. How James Taylor can still belt out “Fire & Rain” with all the energy and effort of his younger days is beyond me 😅 But I’ve never gotten tired of this one. As my journey through life changes and evolves (and devolves), I find new appreciation for it. I play it in almost every set for that reason. I wrote this song almost 10 years ago about my dear friend’s journey to sobriety. Since then, my life has changed in countless ways. Namely, I’m over two years booze free myself. It feels more like my song than it ever has. It makes me all kinds of grateful for this music making charge I’ve taken on. My prayer is that my songs lift people out of darkness or at least give them a confidante when they’re in the thick of it. And no one has benefited more from this than me. I want you to hear this song. I want you and everybody else to hear all my songs. But notoriety is not what fuels me nor is it my North Star. I follow the feelings, the healing harmonies, the gut-punching I’m-in-this-with-you kind of lyrics. Because inevitably when I look back, I can see that I wrote these for the versions of me that thought the night would never end. And I know how scary that feeling is.
