Just putting this right here. Reflecting…

Black people spent over 100 years trying to teach our oppressors how to cultivate an ethical core.

Voting is THE VERY LEAST a citizen can do. And this is what white folk and their adjacents do. 🤷🏾‍♀️

White Supremacy is the core of the ethic of this country. That’s why people want to immigrate here! Align with master - get money. Rinse repeat.

Democrats refused to listen to their constituency.
They bent over for billionaires.
Billionaires only get one vote (as of now at least). And they sold us out. Again. In the most painful of ways. Using our dreams against us.

Scary.

Well white folk, put on your blue dresses and get ready for the rape rituals, start darning red hoods for your slaves. This is the world you voted for.
Not All. Of course. (I put this qualification here for the fucking idiots. ) Yeah. Not all.

So pleased that THE DEEP WEST ASSEMBLY is a part of 2024 #nyff62!
@thenyff

This film lived as a monster in my head for years. But several attempts (included in the final) never felt complete. We managed to literally stitch it together between May and June of this year. I am leaving it all on the floor🤗🪩

Co-produced by @astrupfearnleymuseet, creatively produced by @marimunro🎇 , and graphic effects produced by @marsudac 📺, cinematography by @haley_minyoung_kreofsky (and me but you will easily register Haley’s gorgeous work), costume design by @pr3ciousliljem , and super resourceful prop design by @sallyblu_
🎬🎥🎞️📼📹🟩🟢🧩
Starring the luminous and fiercely intelligent actor @iamdionneaudain 🎈❤️
Ancestral presence brought to you by @khalifboyd 🕺🏽🌍🎭🩵

With appearances from artists @thereal.aliciapiller and @vickiearavindhan 🖌️📌📚👁️

Sound by #jameo
Mixed @esschicago, colored by Andrew Francis 👂🏾🦻🏾🎧

Music by The Art Ensemble of Chicago (thank you Mr. Mitchell!)🎼🎵🎶🎺🥁🎹🎷🪈

Thank you St Louis Art Museum, for the tiffs 📷 and bg research.

Special thank you to the DASL Crew
#michaelagyin
@mervinpobryant
#marcbowman
And @nyeishaprince, Director of DASL🔥🧏🏾‍♀️🧏🏿‍♂️🧏🏽🎀🗝️🙏🏾

This list is incomplete. I send love and thanks to all, ALL the shepherds. 💗💓

The Deep West Assembly🏜️
Cauleen Smith, 2024, U.S., 35m
World Premiere:
America’s violent history of settler colonial extraction and enslavement is posited against the expansive lens of geologic time in The Deep West Assembly. Commingling theater and computer animation, textiles and dance, Black and Indigenous cultural traditions, Cauleen Smith locates an anti-racist methodology for the end of the world in the spaces underground, where the interior of the Earth becomes a place of possibility and new ways of relating.

It has taken me a moment to gather thoughts about the wonderful privilege of being included so intimately in this glorious epistolary show curated by @amberesseiva for @icavcu, #DearMazie.

Dear Mazie, is a group exhibition inspired by the life and work of Amaza Lee Meredith (1895–1984), the trailblazing artist and educator who became the first known Black queer woman to practice as an architect in the United States. Curator Amber Esseiva has commissioned 11 contemporary artists, designers, and architects to create responses to Meredith’s multifaceted legacy for this show, which will be accompanied by public programs and a robust publication enriched with archival material.

Such a stellar roster of contributing artists! —AD–WO (Emanuel Admassu and Jen Wood), The Black School (Joseph Cuillier and Shani Peters), Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo, Kapwani Kiwanga, Abigail Lucien, Practise (James Goggin and Shan James), Tschabalala Self and moi!✨🤗☺️

Not only did I get to do a deep dive into the life of this phenomenal person, Amaza Meredith, I was invited to do site visit her family’s summer home in Azurest, Sag Harbor.

Upon arrival I was embraced by the most elegant and gracious host, Mr. Williams who promptly connected me with a descendant of Amaza’s sister Maud, the founder of the glorious Sag Harbor community, AZUREST, as well as many generational residents. 🙏🏾✨

I learned a lot of things but truthfully this was the first time I really considered Summer as something more than to be survived. Leisure! Black people doing leisure. The east coast is wild! I love it. 💗

My piece is about place, making it and the need for it. From Long Island to Bruce Beach. From the deep west to Palestine. We need places to be to share to rest to love to think to create.

Thank you, Amber, Andrew, and the entire ICA VCU crew. 💙

Thank you Azurest Fam. 💙

For all of it. For being in good company. For everything. Thank you. 🙏🏾 💙🌊🌅

A huge thank you to everyone that joined us for «Sensing the Deep» by B16 Collective, an embodied conversation and reflection on «The Deep West Assembly» by Cauleen Smith! ✨🌋

For two hours, Amalie Sasha Schanke, Yurley Larsen (alias Yurleyley) and Jasmin Lindstrøm (alias Jazzy), performed an experimental and exploratory improvisation!

As we accompanied the dancers through the exhibition, we bore witness to the themes, emotions, and inspirations that emerged. We were granted the privilege of engaging with their process and how their experiences as racialized Black bodies in Norway resonated with Cauleen Smith’s work, which delved into concepts of geological time and Blackness, Afrofuturism, memory, history, literature, and the environment.

«Sensing the Deep» was a part of the public program for the exhibition The Deep West Assembly. The program is a collaboration between Cauleen Smith and Ayesha Jordan with contributions from ASSATA, Jelsen Lee Innocent, Nora Mamdu, Jessica Lauren Elizabeth Taylor, The Free Black Women’s Library, Waldane Walker and members of B16 Collective: Amalie Sasha Schanke, Yurley Larsen (alias Yurleyley) and Jasmin Lindstrøm (alias Jazzy).

Blomsterarrangementer 🌸📺

_

Flower Arrangements 🌸📺

Eight related videos are assembled into a sculptural column. Each video is filmed with a static camera, and depicts the artist carefully arranging flowers. The videos are part of an ongoing series that Smith has been working on since 2010, and are loosely inspired by traditions of flower arranging, such as Japanese ikebana. They are underpinned by a meditative atmosphere found in several other works in the exhibition.

These works are also a tribute to early video art, such as Black and Blue Over You (After Bas Jan Ader for Ishan) (2010)—a direct reference to conceptual artist Bas Jan Ader’s video Primary Time, from 1974. Like Smith’s videos, Ader’s work is a recording of the artist arranging flowers, but where Ader’s film is without sound, Smith’s video is accompanied by a saxophone solo, taken from Anthony Braxton’s Saxophone Improvisations Series F (1972).
