Augenzeugnisse—with Annette Hauschild: "In the early nineties about two hundred buildings in East Berlin were squatted. Some of my photos in the exhibition are of a build-ing on Neue Schönhauser Strasse, where I lived from 1992 to 1998. Our building wasn’t especially political. I’d say it was squat-ted more for pragmatic reasons. It was legalized, like many build-ings, which had been squatted before a specific date. We had a rental or rather a usage contract. Many different people lived here together: nightlife freaks alongside students, nebulous creatives with techno kids dealing drugs or bicycles. There were two clubs on the ground floor, the KaDeWe and the Go-Go Bar, one hard-core S&M-style dive bar. So you could hear the bass beats all night long from one or the other. It wasn’t a coexistence devoid of conflict, but the fact that we were wholly self-governed brought us together and eased relations. Exciting things were happening here, right at Hackescher Markt. There were communes, illegal bars and clubs, and plenty of space for creativity. The building was in bad shape and some of the apartments had been empty for a long time. I lived in a large shared apartment on the top floor, consisting of three apartments that we slowly merged. In the photo you can see us in our shared kitchen, wearing scarves and jackets. One of us is standing on the heating stove. The old tiled coal stoves didn’t heat the rooms well, and the coal was in the rat-infested cellar, so we often just heated the kitchen with a multi-fuel stove that we built ourselves and spent almost all of our time there in the winter."

We asked nine OSTKREUZ photographers to share their stories about one of their photographs as eyewitnesses to history—from the perspective they had when they took it and the knowledge they have now. Join us on this journey back in time!

In her powerful film Curanderxs, @laura_huertas_millan delves into the coca plant’s fraught history—a symbol of resilience and resistance. Inspired by colonial Inquisition documents, the work uncovers stories of women criminalized for their connection to coca, intertwining it with witchcraft, divination, and subversive queer identities. Through speculative fiction and silent film aesthetics, Curanderxs resurrects these femmes*, envisioning their return to confront and challenge colonial narratives.

Augenzeugnisse—with Maurice Weiss: "After reunification, deep foundation pits were dug out across Berlin. These massive holes were at Friedrichstadtpassage and at Potsdamer Platz, to give just two examples. Berliners became impassioned architecture critics. Everyone knew all about architects such as Sir Norman Foster, Axel Schulte, and Richard Rogers as well as their buildings around the world. But where did the armies of construction workers come from? As a student, I worked on construction sites for years and was more interested in the background of the construction workers than the big architecture stars. They came from across Europe, mostly from Poland, Ireland, and Portugal. None of them spoke German. With my 5 × 5-inch plate camera I took photos in the manner of August Sander. One of the construction workers was from a village in northern Portugal. Unfortunately I’ve forgotten his name. He was responsible for insulation and ironwork at the massive Friedrichstadtpassage site. I asked him if he knew what he and his colleagues were actually building there. ‘It must be a church,’ he thought. ‘Such a big building can only be a place of worship."
