The Congo is not only the place where my parents were born. It’s also a historical place where wonders have manifested and will continue to manifest through the power of life. People need time to find themselves... but how can they do that if their only goal and model of life is to carry a bunch of super-heavy bags in the hope of selling them in the city? A lack of time to dream and a lot of wasted time because the roads and paths are primitive, to change it will cost something, but it’ll always be less than a Louis Vuitton. Natisa Exocé Kasango is an Afrocentric multidisciplinary artist who bridges ancestry and modernity through his striking analog collages that transform with movement. His featured series sheds light on the global exploitation of the Congo’s natural resources, a cornerstone for electronic production. Exocé reclaims the e-waste that returns to the Congo as environmental debris, repurposing it into jewelry, accessoires and fashion elements. I had the opportunity to express, during the commemoration of the death of Fumu Kimbangu at the Congolese Embassy in Paris, what many think in silence. After a century filled with doubts and false barriers, it is finally time to reopen the doors to the truth: I am because we are. A special thanks to the Deputy Ambassador of Congo in France for allowing me to participate in this gala, a marriage between tradition and modernity. I wanted to break the overly serious atmosphere among us and bring more clarity, because my mission is now in motion! To the energies opposing this elevation: know that whatever you try to send will return to you threefold, at the very moment you think of it, by the power of the creative energy that drives me! How to function amidst the dystopian reality unfolding. How to say: Hey, I love you - it will be ok. Let this be the expression of rage and pain of two men with scars, with fears, at a loss for words. History has taken its toll… we want to ask for forgiveness and we want to forgive but we don’t know how. We want to liberate our kin and protect those more vulnerable than us but we are hypnotised by the need to be seen, to be validated, to be of value. Pain runs in our bloodlines, it runs in our bodies, it breaks our bones from within, sometimes the pain is greater than us and it creeps out of the shadows into the bare hands of our loved ones… Then a sorry is not enough. We know what we are here for, we know the work that needs to be done and as the discomfort rises to its peak so will we. God willing. Inshallah. May we stay on our path more steadily, may we learn from our mistakes and grow beyond the confines of our histories - may we alchemise, keep transforming, there is nothing else left to do for us.
