For as long as he’s been a member of Charleston, South Carolina’s Americana ensemble SUSTO, songwriter Johnny Delaware has also been releasing solo recordings that venture into similar realms of roots- and folk-rock. His exploratory third full-length collection of songs, ‘Para Llevar,’ was released last month via Normaltown and New West Records, and it compiled 10 “nomadic” tracks recorded across the US, Mexico, and various other corners of Latin America with the sounds of each stop on his journey clearly finding their way into the music. Back home in the States, Delaware filmed a “Neighborhoods” session outside the Normaltown/New West offices in Athens, Georgia, where he strums through the tracks “Jungle Full of Ghosts” and “Running” from his new LP. If you think meeting an artist you idolize might be awkward, it’s even harder when you’re an artist yourself. Hinds’ Ana Perrote and Carlotta Cosials met Beck at a documentary screening in Los Angeles. They held down their fangirling long enough to talk to him about doing something together, then nothing happened. Just like a new crush when you don’t know if you should text them or not, Hinds weren’t sure whether they should send Beck a message. Then, when they landed back home in Spain, there was a text from him saying, “Wasn’t I going to sing on one of your songs? How do we do this?” The result of their collab, “Boom Boom Back,” is one of FLOOD’s Best Songs of 2024. You might not be familiar with the late Allee Willis, but you certainly will know some of the music she’s responsible for co-writing. Try Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September” and “Boogie Wonderland,” the ‘Friends‘ TV show theme “I’ll Be There For You,” Pet Shop Boys and Dusty Springfield’s “What Have I Done to Deserve This?,” or the Pointer Sisters’ “Neutron Dance” for starters. But Willis’ story goes far beyond the music she was responsible for creating. She also built a reputation as an art director, avant garde furniture maker, party host, and collector of what she dubbed “the world’s largest assortment of kitsch-related memorabilia,” as showcased with her online Allee Wills Museum of Kitsch.
