INLOVINGMEMORY of BILLIE DUMAS a.k.a. FUTURA’S MOM ❤️ HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Thank you for raising an exceptional, kind, and human being the world has come to love. We are grateful for him and his contributions to the culture.
Futura’s mother, Billie, was black and his father, Bill, was white. Being a bi-racial couple in the mid 1950s was not popular nor socially accepted. This is the reason that his parents hardly ever went out together, dined outside or took photos. Unfortunately, Billie passed away 49 years ago but she was able to proudly see her son in his naval uniform after boot camp. 🙏
That is not Billie but she took the photo in Futura’s childhood home.

1️⃣9️⃣8️⃣0️⃣ FUTURA…HEIST…
Story time by ZEPHYR:
“There was an eleven day transit strike in NYC in April, 1980. FUTURA and I were busy running ESSES STUDIO but we knew we had to do some trains and we did get out there and take advantage of the situation. In fact on Friday, April 11th, 1980, we shut the studio to go paint in the 3 Yard. Unfortunately we were in the yard when the strike ended. An alarm rang and then suddenly dozens of workers flooded into the yard. We got to the hole in the fence and escaped by the skin of our teeth!!! I got this photo on 125th Street with my trusty Kodak 110.“

2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣4️⃣ “AEROSOL AESTHETIC”
Here’s a look into the process of FUTURA’s on-site mural installation for his retrospective exhibition FUTURA 2000: BREAKING OUT at The Bronx Museum. Documented by his son, @13thwitness, it’s a full circle homecoming moment for FUTURA. It’s incredible to realize that the early NYC graffiti art movement was started by a community of creative, rebellious inner city kids, with their imagination and a desire to express themselves.
As we always say and will forever to true . . . KIDS ARE THE FUTURA. ❤️

INLOVINGMEMORY of MONSIEUR PHILIPPE BRIET ❤️ HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SIR.
Philippe Briet’s importance can’t be denied in FUTURA 2000’s career. He showed FUTURA in his New York gallery in 1988. This led to Briet introducing FUTURA to agnès b., who has been and continues to be a long patron — she set up FUTURA with a studio to paint again. Briet believed FUTURA deserved to be included in the higher art conversation. He was responsible for FUTURA having one of his first museum exhibitions in Europe at the Musée de Vire in Normandie, France. Unfortunately, Briet had an untimely death. You are missed dearly.
