30 years ago I did a show in London for Madiba. This year I went back to show a collection again in celebration of 30 years of democracy. It was inspired by a gift Madiba gave me, his book, ‘A Prisoner in the Garden’. The inspiration for this collection stems from a deeply personal gift I received from
Nelson Mandela—a book titled A Prisoner in the Garden. The book’s profound message of hope, growth, and renewal amid adversity resonated deeply with me. It speaks to the quiet yet powerful act of nurturing life, even when confined in the harshest of
circumstances, much like Mandela’s own experience during his imprisonment.
In this collection, I sought to translate the themes from A Prisoner in the Garden into fashion. Floral motifs dominate the designs, symbolizing growth, beauty, and resilience
in the face of hardship. Just as a garden flourishes with care and attention, so too do the lives of these women who have been given the opportunity to bloom through their craft. The embroidery on each piece, crafted by these women, represents not just delicate artistry, but the perseverance and determination to rise above their circumstances.
The collection speaks to the idea that from struggle can come beauty and transformation.
Every stitch, every flower, and every detail is a testament to the power of hope and the strength of the human spirit to foster change in the world—even through something as
simple, yet profound, as gardening. This collection is not just a celebration of 30 years of democracy but also a tribute to the women who continue to embody resilience, hope, and growth, much like the garden Mandela nurtured during his imprisonment.
Through this collection, I aim to share a message of empowerment, resilience, and beautiful , reminding us all that, even in the face of adversity, there is always hope. #gavinrajah #mandela #30yearsofdemocracy #southafrica #fashion #16daysofactivism photography
