Be careful out there! Straights often lurk in nearby lineups and are prone to aggression when faced with groups of queer surfers. Historically they’ve dominated most breaks but their dwindling numbers suggest that their adaptation of localism rather than community has diminished their advantage of the sport. Stay alert and sashay your wave firmly if a straight tries to come for it! This is obviously a joke and we love all our straight surfers and instructors. The best waves require faith. To surf means to wait. The LLC for Gay Surf Week was first filed in 2018, six years before the first retreat took place. I laugh at how slow I move sometimes, how fear gets in the way, just a few words a day. Yet, I always seem to make my way. Every hard moment before replaced by endless laughs ashore. Thank you to everyone who has believed in Gay Surf Week. Thank you to those who’ve joined the retreats, entrusting me and embracing me like forever friends from the start. I’ll doggy paddle and crawl my way to shore just to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with people like these again soon. I always feared surfing would require compromise, within myself or the community I most adore. There’s no playbook for people like us; a blessing once you accept it. If Gay Surf Week has taught me anything, it’s that anything can expand when grounded in love. Carve out space if you feel closed-out and the right people will join you in the line-up.
