My crit of Aftersun w/ spoilers. Amongst the astute creative decisions which compound to represent the theme of ‘memory’ in Well’s triumphant directorial debut, Aftersun, one stood out that left the biggest impression on my memory: Wells’ inclusion of the enigmatic rave sequences. Due to the chaotic crowd, dim illumination, and strobe effect — which keeps the sequence in complete darkness for the most part, breaking it up with split seconds of repetitive flashing illumination — the sequence demands a participatory relationship with the audience, as it will likely elicit questions in first-time viewers, provoking interpretation. Who are these people? When and where is this rave happening in relation to the story and characters? How does it relate to the story and characters? This inquisitive state, instigated by the fragmented nature of these sequences, allows the audience to experience adult Sophie’s perspective first-hand as she’s trying to piece together fragments of memories of her father, Calum, about whom she feels left in the dark. Throughout young Sophie’s vacation with her father we see signs of his depression and financial struggles, but the details and reasons behind them — all of which are wrapped up in his personal life outside of being a father — are unknown to both Sophie and the audience. The final moments of Aftersun bring us back full circle as the camera gradually pans around from the paused DV footage of younger Sophie waving goodbye to Calum at the airport (which we briefly saw during the opening of the film) to the adult Sophie sitting in her present-day apartment holding the DV camera and replaying the footage from this long-past holiday on her home projector screen. This reveal helps to solidify the overarching perspective of the film which stems from adult Sophie’s attempt to understand the father she knew, alongside the man outside of that fatherhood whom she doesn’t. From beginning to end, Well’s clarity in her creative expression transcends the otherwise uneventful narrative of Aftersun into an emotionally profound experiential portrayal of a specific kind of memory — that which forever haunts us and shapes our everyday existence.
