The Habesha coffee ceremony is a core cultural custom in Ethiopia and Eritrea. There is a routine of serving coffee daily, mainly for the purpose of getting together with relatives, neighbours, or other visitors.
Book a ceremony for you and your friends @gwadakitchen on a Saturday or Sunday between 12 and 4pm

As we approach Refugee week, we wanted to share about a volunteer training evening for Hackney night shelter at Gwarda restaurant. A couple of weeks ago the owner of Gwarda @gwadakitchen in Dalston, Silvia, Baptise and their lovely family held a fantastic evening for our shelter volunteers - providing amazing Habesha (Ethiopian and Eritrean) food for the evening, and there were a few special guests at dinner who were there to tell us their stories and to open up an opportunity to learn more about a culture of people we have had a chance to get to know a lot over the last year in our shelter.
There is an on going global refugee crisis. Hackney Night Shelter is supporting a lot more refugees in 2024 than we have done in previous years. The push to process asylum applications whilst reducing the 28 day eviction period from home office emergency accommodation to 7 days in some cases, changes implemented by the uk government last August, have left many refugees with no other option but to sleep on the streets. 50,845 people were granted asylum between July and December 2023. the refugee crisis affects people from many different countries, including Eritrea; the government in Eritrea continues to suppress basic rights, including freedom of opinion, religion, and expression, and the government has a notoriously corrupt forced mass conscription policy. We are sharing articles in our stories today to highlight some of the history of the situation there.
There is the opportunity to learn more about the people of the countries affected by this global crisis we are in whilst we continue to support the needs of anyone in the city who is experiencing street homelessness and provide emergency accommodation and assist people in finding a way to long term sustainable accommodation.
