I’ve spent the last fortnight on a residency @stephenswindellsstudio in the Morvan, Burgundy, France. It’s been a fantastic, productive experience and I can see developments in my painting that I’m looking forward to building on when I return to the UK. 1 - This is one of several smaller paintings I’ve been working on, experimenting with bringing in graphic elements inspired by spaces in medieval paintings I’ve been looking at when visiting the Beaux Artes Museum in nearby Dijon. 2 - Towards the end of the residency I’ve been working on a series of acrylic on paper drawings. Inspired by objects from my sketchbooks, looking at other paintings and things around me here in Burgundy. 3 - The studio is enormous. It’s been incredible painting in such a space…being able to sit or stand back from paintings and to view them in groups. 4 - Moving things around in this vast space has been a very important part of the work over the past couple of weeks. Understanding how paintings operate next to one another. 5 - The studio is surrounded by beautiful gardens and I’ve been blessed with gorgeous sunny weather almost the entire time here, aside from one quite dramatic storm!. 6 - My original intention, on coming here, had been to work on 6 large canvases I’d prepared. Not with the expectation of finishing them but getting something happening and then bringing them back and continuing with them. This is one of the 6, and has already been through a number of iterations. I’m starting to think about the importance of edges in relation to this piece in particular. 7 - A smaller painting. 8 - A wall of “Shed Paintings”, all acrylic on paper.
