On this day in 1485, Catherine of Aragon was born.

Catherine was destined to become Queen. She was the daughter of the famed Catholic warrior monarchs Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon. Her first marriage had been arranged in her infancy and was to Arthur, Prince of Wales. This marriage was short lived however, and Arthur died just five months later.

Seven years later, after Arthur’s younger brother became King Henry VIII of England, one of the new king Henry’s first decisions was to marry Catherine, his brother’s widow.

Their only child to survive into adulthood was Mary I. After 24 years of marriage, and no living male heirs, Henry began to look for ways out of his marriage to Catherine. For seven years the Pope refused to annul their marriage, ultimately resulting in the Act of Supremacy and the Break from the Church in Rome.

As Henry’s new chosen queen, Anne Boleyn, began to rise, Catherine was forced to leave court and spend the rest of her life in reduced circumstances until her death in 1536.

She maintained until the end that she was Henry VIII’s one true wife and queen.

On this day in 1542, Mary Stuart became Queen of Scotland at the tender age of just 6 days old, following the death of her father James V.

She spent most of her childhood in France and in 1558, she married the Dauphin of France, Francis. He became King in 1559, and Mary briefly became queen consort of France, until his death in December 1560.

Mary returned to Scotland and four years later she married her cousin, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley. The marriage was not happy and in February 1567, his residence was destroyed by an explosion and Darnley was found murdered in the garden.

In May that same year, Mary married for the third time, this time to Lord Bothwell. Following an uprising against the couple, Mary was imprisoned in Lochleven Castle where she was forced to abdicate in favour of James, her one-year-old son by Darnley.

She fled south seeking the protection of her first cousin once removed, Queen Elizabeth I of England. Mary had previously claimed Elizabeth's throne as her own and was considered the legitimate sovereign of England by many English Catholics. Perceiving her as a threat, Elizabeth had her confined in various castles across England.

After eighteen and a half years in custody, Mary was found guilty of plotting to assassinate Elizabeth, and was subsequently executed.

On this day in 1542 Mary, Queen of Scots was born.

Paintings of Mary created during her lifetime are few and far between. However, at Hever Castle we have a rare portrait of Mary.

The work is believed to come from the studio of François Clouet (c.1510 –1572), a French Renaissance miniaturist and painter, particularly known for his detailed portraits of the French ruling family.

The discovery of this contemporary likeness of Mary Queen of Scots is particularly important as there are only two portraits of her in mourning – the second one (in full mourning) is in the Royal Collection.

The Hever work shows Mary in a form of mourning, but not the full mourning seen in earlier portraits.
