My philosophy clocks are in @behance ‘s round up of their favourite clock designs today, so decided to bring the optimist and nihilist clock back to my feed. You can never escape my clocks. The typographic tapestries from my project Eroded Expressions @designmuseum affirm the importance of language to define and design the worlds we inhabit. The words stitched into the dark tapestry describe lost links to land and place. The light tapestry shows terms which celebrate connection to our environments. With these words sourced from communities who speak languages from the Celtic family, my project asked; what can we as English-speaking communities learn from these terms? How might they influence our responses to the climate emergency?
This project would not have been possible without the many native speakers who gave me access to their worlds and languages, to enable me to share their definitions with you and highlight important concepts which have gone overlooked by many for far too long: Dilathair (Gaeilge/Irish Gaelic): The absence felt when something or somewhere has been depopulated, abandoned or lost.
Hiraeth (Cymraeg/Welsh): A longing for a sense of home and belonging, particularly a sense of connection to a lost or distant homeland, often associated with feelings of nostalgia and homesickness for a certain time.
Cianalas (Gàidhlig/Scots Gaelic): A sense of homesickness or nostalgia for the land you’re from.
Dùthchas (Gaeilge/Irish Gaelic): A sense of belonging to a place, typically a rural or natural environment, and the inherited connection to that place and its culture.
Cynefin (Cymraeg/Welsh): A sense of belonging to a place, particularly one's place of birth, and the deep knowledge and understanding of that place and its natural environment. Dúchas (Gàidhlig/Scots Gaelic): A sense of belonging to a place, typically a rural or natural environment, and the inherited connection to that place and its culture.
Thanks also @lilaboschet for being an excellent back of head model again this year 🫠

After an amazing 7 years at the helm of ATYPICAL, today marks the last day before I’m onto new adventures. 🌊
Cofounding and running this company through most of my twenties has taught me so much about the creative world, about business and about myself, and I’m grateful for every minute as I step into new things. None of this would have been possible without the great team myself and @jacobjamesphoto have had along the way, thankyou to each and every one of you.
For now, I am working on a few cool freelance contracts, so watch this space 👀 . As always, if you have a project idea and need an art director or designer, please get in touch, I love working too much.

I made this ´Perspectives’ screen print in 2017 as part of a typographic series for my residency with Adobe. To bring the poster into the real world and create an unconventional and on message campaign image for the print, myself and @jacobjamesphoto folded it onto the steps of a brutalist building in Leeds to photograph (if you know Leeds, you know which building it is). Sadly, since then, this image has been regularly pirated and spread online, with other people photoshopping their own posters over the top. We also think someone out there might be selling it as a mock-up. We never made a mock-up of this, so if you see this image with any other design out there please report it and let me know. Also, art direction for posters should be fun and unique and conceptually support the design you’ve made, it’s honestly kind of boring to just pirate other peoples images. Anyway, rant over, enjoy my perspective✨

Unshown practice Celtic calligraphy squiggles for @designmuseum ✍️. We also displayed the pens in the exhibition and kids kept trying to steal them, which is a very nerdy heist so I’m not mad

The Future Observatory Journal is a an online journal for The Design Museum @designmuseum on new thinking around design research, ecology and futures.
This issue focuses on Bioregioning - a method of using our local environments as a template for design, politics and regeneration. Amongst contributions on architecture, textiles, design and earth mining, you can find a small piece on my typeface project “Ogma”, and why design and language are important tools in ecological thinking.
Thankyou @lilaboschet for the thoughtful summary and inclusion of my project 🌱

Workshop season is here!! Starting off strong yesterday with ‘Garden Glyphs’ at @designmuseum with the Growing Together community garden team, looking at all things letters, language and horticulture. Thanks for inviting me and sharing with me some beautiful letterforms (and the unexpected homemade soup) 🌱

It’s easy to make a great poster when the base visuals are THIS good. Last week I made a poster and invites for the Shoreditch VIP screening of @lucassjoness and @sophie.kingsley’s beautiful new short Winner Fights The Moon. 🌙

A lovely feature on @itsnicethat today talking to @olivia_hingley about the process of creating ‘The Language of Plants’ at Chelsea Flower Show. This collaboration between @studioatypical and @growtropicals explored the intersection of botany and typography. The installation showcased the overlap of terms, the ‘stem’ of a letter or a plant, or the idea of a flower or font ‘specimen’. Centered around a typeface which visualised botanical forms, the installation contextualised the words and typeface amongst the plants. Read more in bio link about our experimental font agenda! 🌱
