On this important night in American and global politics, here’s a still from the Trump hunting. The open world is populated by around 600 zombie Trumps whose AI is focused solely on you. It is designed with specific doom laden procedural logic, if you spend two much time stood still you will be swamped by them and lose. All the terrain was made by drone scanning his golf courses in Scotland then using photogrammetry to make accurate 3D models of the landscape. Clune Park, Port Glasgow, Inverclyde, Scotland. A nearly abandoned housing estate, only 5 residents remain in the 450 flats. A victim of the declining ship building industry, it lies derelict and scheduled for demolition. I used a cheap(ish) 360 degree camera to capture some of the streets about 2 years ago. The video footage was then cut, flattened and chopped into pieces to make a data set with which to generate neural radiance field type spaces. They sat on a hard drive until last week when I imported them into Unreal Engine and lit the buildings and streets. I’m finding myself leaning more and more into a technically broken aesthetic. Generated using tools that are designed and striving to produce one to one realism that competes to overcome the actual. Failures and artefacts in my meshes are brought about by stretching the capabilities of consumer grade equipment in conjunction with a poor and jittery process induced directly by my experience of the anxious places and landscapes I wander. I keep and catalogue all mistakes and failures in defiance of the realism machines I’m so enamoured and obsessed by. I was reminded today of I show I worked on designing and programming laser choreography with aerial Corde Lisse artist @aedinaladeen, @bex.anson, Sue Zuki and @saul.baum. We spent some time devising it at Cirkus Cirkor in Stockholm and then performed it at Circomedia in Bristol and at a couple of venues in Glasgow. Researcher Kate Holmes saw it in Bristol and wrote a brilliant and thoughtful reflection.
