Del and Saafir, August 1993. At the Oakland Public Library: Golden Gate Branch in Emeryville on San Pablo Ave down the street from Del’s apartment. I was interviewing Del for Blunt Magazine and Saafir rolled up while we were shooting. There was no reason not to shoot them together. Today - these time capsules feel even more significant. Saafir had just been in Menace II Society and anyone appearing in a movie felt extra legit. He had a guest track with Casual and Boxcar Sessions wouldn’t be out for another year. Impact isn’t always about having a #1 record - it’s often about being there and being active and being yourself. Saafir had a powerful voice and such a unique flow. Influential and important to the building blocks of 90’s Hip-Hop. Both images are in my book and an alternate image was printed on Tuesday for my show. The energy has been in the air. Respect.
