JULIAN CHARRIERE “TOWARDS NO EARTHLY POLE” For this Installation work, which is the centrepiece of an entire Exhibition of the same name, I had the pleasure to team up with Julian Charriere and his team. Charriere, who is a former student of Olafur Eliasson, travelled for this work to some of the most inhospitable places on earth, like, e.g. the Antarctic, Greenland, Iceland, the Rhone and the Aletsch glaciers, as well as the Mont Blanc. With a setup of two drones, one carrying the lighting setup and a second one carrying the camera, Julian and his team brought back stunning images of the journey, which were combined to a 105minute montage, which takes the viewer of the exhibition to a magic journey through these impressive landscapes. “I remember one stormy night crossing the Drake Passage toward Antarctica with Dehlia, on board the scientific vessel Akademik Sergey Vanilov. We were on the upper deck drinking some strong coffee and looking at the instruments on the bridge [. . .]. And then, at all once, a colossal iceberg broke out of the darkness in the beam of light, just for a brief instant. It was as if it was suspended in time before disappearing again into obscurity.” – Julian Charriere The exhibition premiered at the LAC “Lugano Arte e Cultura” of the MASI Lugano and since then was shown at the Sean Kelly Gallery, NYC and the Aargauer Kunsthaus. Next stop will be – if COVID permits – the Dallas Museum of Art. If you ever have the chance to visit the exhibition: go for it. It is worth it.
