Visualizing the unknowable 📸

Jarod Lew’s series ‘In Between You and Your Shadow’ (2021-2023) reflects on intergenerational encounters of diasporic loss and photography’s role in visualizing truth and cultural memory.

The series examines the artist’s relationship to his parents after learning of his mother’s previous engagement to Vincent Chin, who was murdered by hate crime in Detroit in 1982, which led to one of the largest Asian American civil rights movements.

Imbued with light flares and shadows, Lew’s intimate portraits turn away from “official” histories towards untold stories and memories in the formation of personal and cultural identity.

Lew’s work is currently on view as part of ‘Makeshift Memorials, Small Revolutions’ at the Blaffer Art Museum (@blafferartmuseum), University of Houston, until March 9, 2025.

This past Monday I was able to watch the amazing @thenotarypublic and @erikameichua put the finishing touches for an exhibition I’m apart of titled: Makeshift Memorials, Small Revolutions at @blafferartmuseum

Thank you both for inviting me to be apart of the exhibition and to give an artist talk about my practice! ♥️

My amazing friend Simon Wu’s book Dancing On My Own comes out today! This past winter I spent a weekend making photographs with @noghost_justshell at his childhood home in PA—enjoying his mothers home cooked meals, listening to his father meditate in the morning and having Rita’s Italian Ice for the first time.

Some of the work we made together will be shown in an exhibition titled “Cuteness Is The Beauty I Can Afford Which Is The Beauty I Deserve” alongside works made by him and his mom, and @ekinbilal. Come by on 6/28 at @earshot.nyc (255 Canal) from 8-11 PM.

In his series “Please Take Off Your Shoes,” Jarod Lew (@jarodlew) photographs other young Asian Americans in their homes, dressed casually and addressing his camera with frankness. Here he describes the process of creating the photo “Consumption of Love (Eugene, Miyi, and Qun)” (2020), and the significance of what it contains.

See this piece and more of Jarod Lew’s photography as part of our exhibition “Kinship: Photography and Connection” on Floor 3!
