Bringing together her Indigenous Papua New Guinean and Gunditjmara heritage with her background as a professional makeup artist, @kaiit_isshe channels the different facets of her identity into bespoke characters, consistently relaying depth throughout her evolution.
Her latest alter ego, ‘Lil Mama’, begins a new chapter for the artist. “When I was coming up with the characters, I thought, ’Okay, I need to learn how to tap dance now. They’re all just reflections of me, each one a different side of my journey,” she says. “I just wanted to create another world for myself to be in.”
Unveiled at the Sydney Opera House earlier this year, ‘Lil Mama’ is a persona that promises to push boundaries even further; if her roots built the foundation, her evolution is proof she’s growing taller, stronger, and always on her terms.
We caught up with Kaiit to discuss her vibrant new era - read the full interview at the link in bio!

Take a set at one of @kaiit_isshe soul-filled salon chairs for this week’s Feature Video, ‘Lil Mama Theme Song’.
The Naarm-based neo-soul queen’s newest single is a playful reminder of lessons learned the hard way. “At the time of writing Lil Mama Theme Song, I was distracting myself a lot by going out, drinking, self sabotaging myself really, because I knew the next day I had things to do” says Kaiit. “Lyrically, for the most part, I write like I’m talking to myself, so when I listen to my music I’m lowkey yelling the reminders AT ME!”.
The clip for ‘Lil Mama Theme Song’ follows Kaiit as the character of Lil Mama, who works in a barbershop by day and escapes to a hidden speakeasy within a drive-in cinema by night, where she comes alive through tap-dancing and performance. Directed by long time collaborator and friend @claudiasangiorgidalimore , the music video’s creation has been a heartfelt, collaborative process. “Kaiit and I are now 7 years deep” says Claudia. “We are in an exciting stage of our evolution, being able to co-direct. We are family, so there’s a lot of laughter and love between us. That warmth comes through in this clip.”
“On set I looked around and felt a deep sense of completion in my job. So much diversity of who was in the room, crew and cast alike. By the end of the day I was like a proud stage mum hooting and whistling my face off at Lil Mama as she tap danced the night away.”
Kaiit mirrors these thoughts from Claudia, saying “we are such kids together and I’m so thankful for the space we create for eachother - not just when filming but the space leading up to filming, expressing the vision and the execution”.
“We have so much fun together and the joy you feel watching the ‘Lil Mama Theme Song’ music video is the joy we created for eachother on the day.”
There’s moments of silence where restoration, inspiration and grounding take place. Just as we took a year long break to recharge, our @kaiit_isshe the face of our digital cover has made a comeback, blessing the launch of 614 Online. We’re BACK.
