It was absolutely insane getting to film Jonathan Davis from Korn. Growing up this was honestly one of my favorite bands so to see and work with him in person was mind blowing. This shoot was a lot of work camera department wise. We carried the entire camera package down 2 flights of stairs and then up four and then back down 2 flights because the place didn’t have an elevator. Got to work with Meghan Trainor. A lot of running around to make sure batteries stayed full and lenses were swapped on time but that’s all par for the course. Overall it was a pretty fun day!

Your boy got to pull focus on this one. Always grateful to be busy working in this industry through all its ups and downs. Sometimes just hanging on and surviving is a miracle but then you look back and realize you get to work on all these big projects and not only just be there but as an integral of their production. That part is satisfying. Knowing you were right there in the action rolling the camera, keeping it in focus, and making sure everything runs smoothly. Was flown out to Newark to film this in Pensilvania. The biggest challenge was making sure we had all the camera support there on location while still getting through airport security and minimizing the amount of cases. Got to 1st AC on this. Simple Plan is a band I grew up hearing their songs on the radio. “Welcome to my Life”, “I’m just a Kid”, “I’d do Anything”, and “What’s New Scooby Doo”. It was my first time mounting an Arri LF on a Movi Gimbal which made camera control fun but luckily they rented a WCU hi-5 so I could control the camera wirelessly when the app wasn’t playing nice. Definitely some learning moments on this one but hey if I’m not learning I might as well stay home.. When characters in films run out of a burning building or simply walk across a room to open the door, they are usually moving closer or further away from the camera. This means that the focal length — the distance of the camera lens from the subject — is constantly changing. Adapting or “pulling” focus to accommodate these changes is the main responsibility of the 1st Assistant Camera (AC) sometimes you only get one chance to make sure the subject is in focus and the amount of depth you have that is actually in focus can be very small. Sometimes it’s less than a half of an inch that is actually in focus because the aperture is opened up and/or it’s a larger sensor camera. There’s always a delicate game going on behind the camera that most people who aren’t in the industry don’t know about.
