As a young kid I always had this fascination for climbing, going into trees, climbing on rocks. Now, being able to combine my passion for photography, portraits, nature and mountains by creating these selfportraits is truly a joy to discover. The inspiration to make this images came from a postcard that I saw. Ironically, later in the centre of the village where I was, there was a small market where someone was selling old postcards of this village and it’s forests and mountains. It’s so interesting to see how a place can be photographed a thousand times but is always a bit different because of the perspective, the light, the time frame, the background of the person photographing and their intent. I found it beautiful and interesting to discover these old postcards and to realize how much they could already have inspired so many other people. This selfportrait is an homage to “Cain”, a photo from 1900 by Wilhem Von Gloeden. Which is in itself based on the painting “Jeune homme nu assis sur le bord de la mer” (1836) by Hippolyte Flandrin. This image became a sort of “gay icon”, and was shot again by several photographers, among them also Fred Holland Day, Gaetano D’Agata, Tony Patrioli, and Robert Mapplethorpe. When I recently for the first time saw this photo from Von Gloeden on a postcard in Marseille, I immediately fell in love with it. This timelessness that is has, this fragility but at the same time masculinity. This sense of freedom and being on top of the world. It inspired me to reconnect with my old passion for self-portraits. I had this location in mind that I visited before, and arrived there at 8am to get the perfect first morning light. The image also reminded me of a painting by German Romanticist artist Caspar David Friedrich made in 1818, called Wanderer above the Sea of Fog. As a child, I adored this painting. It gave me a sense of freedom and adventure. Now, looking back to it, I realise there’s also this sense of self-reflection, the perspective of looking forward and being able to see the clear blue sky above the clouds, knowing that the sun is always there, sometimes It’s just hidden. Doing research about this image, I actually found it so inspiring to once again realise, artists build on each other. They find inspiration from previous artworks and make it their own. Based on their own perspective, background and vision on creating their work, they pay homage to art and the history of its protagonists. 🌺 Come on, Dover, Move your blooming arse! 🌺 Another week, another @dragracebelgique look! My interpretation of the iconic Audrey Hepburn look in the musical My Fair Lady. As a huge fan of musical theatre, the choice for this garment was very easily made. Instead of trying to copy the whole original look, designer @_fia______ gave it an 80s prom twist with a shorter dress, open shoulders and gloves up to my elbows. I felt so pretty in this dress, even though the hat was so heavy I felt like I could trip over any moment 🤪 Oh, wouldn't it be loverly? @wowpresentsplus @tipikrtbf Outfit @_fia______ Picture @louiskerckhof

Bethan (she/her) is originally from Wales, but grew up in Latvia until she was 18. After also having lived in Ecuador and Greece, she eventually moved to Antwerp for a relationship and stayed for a PhD. Only last year she ended both of them and decided that 2022 was going to be her Queer Year. ⁠ ⁠ “2022 started with me and my childhood best friend - both having grown up together in a sheltered, religious, homophonic environment - promising ourselves to fully explore and accept our sexuality in what we deemed our “queer year”. Embracing both my queerness and my neurodivergence changed my priorities and boundaries in all areas of life. My tolerance for inauthenticity became a lot lower, and carving a safe space for me to feel happy and myself became easier and more addictive.”⁠ ⁠ Over the years, Bethan has found her chosen family wherever she’s gone, including Antwerp. A place where she has found a gorgeous coven of queer & neurospicy sillies. After her Queer Year in 2022, something has shifted into a new era and she’s only looking forwards from now on. The Queer Year has become a habit for her: “it’s embedded in who I am.
