This holiday when you see old friends who say disapprovingly….”You’ve changed.” My advice is to quip back and say, “Hmmm…..you haven’t.”

Change is called growth and everyone should try it. ❤️

Smart people learn from everyone and everything because they know that true wisdom doesn’t come from knowing—it comes from asking.

If we only surround ourselves with the same people, the same voices, and the same ideas, we limit our ability to grow. We get stuck in an echo chamber of our own comfort, hearing what we already believe instead of discovering what we don’t yet understand.

It’s easy to hold onto a belief when it’s never questioned, but ask yourself: can you fully explain why you believe what you do? If not, then that belief isn’t truly yours—it’s someone else’s. Convictions of beliefs come from actually researching things yourself, not taking someone’s word for it.

Learning isn’t about reinforcing what you know; it’s about challenging it, breaking it apart, and seeing where it holds up.

Growth happens in the questions, not in the answers. It happens when we step outside the familiar, listen to different perspectives, and have the courage to admit when we’re wrong. So stay curious, stay humble, and never stop learning. The moment we think we know it all is the moment we stop growing.”

“Charge your worth” has become a buzz phrase in our industry that needs to change. Your “worth” is inherent. It’s who you are as a person, and no one can take that from you—or put a price tag on it.

But value? That’s something entirely different. Your value is what someone else is willing to pay for your services, not what YOU think it is worth. Value is based on the quality of your service and the overall experience you create for your client. Some hairdressers are slapping high prices on their services and then wondering why their books aren’t full. It’s because what you think your value is does not align with what your client thinks your value is.

So how do you increase your value in a way that elevates your career and your income? Here are four ways:

1. Raise the Quality of Your Work. Are you delivering exceptional results every time? Are you investing in your education, mastering techniques, and staying ahead of trends?

2. Be Reliable. Are you canceling appointments, running late, or failing to communicate? It will cost you clients. Show up, stay organized, and make them feel like a priority every single time.

3. Create a Client Experience, Not Just a Service. From the moment they walk through the door, every detail matters—greeting them with a smile, listening to their needs, and ensuring they leave feeling confident and cared for.

4. Elevate Your Environment. Your space reflects your brand. Is it clean, inviting, and Instagram-worthy? A beautiful, professional location makes clients feel they’re getting a high-value service—and they’re willing to pay for it.

The more value you deliver, the more clients will pay—not because you demanded it, but because you’ve earned it. To level up your skills, make sure to check out @btcuniversity! It’s our lowest price ever- only $99/year for more than 250 full length tutorials!

What are YOU doing today to increase your value? Let me know in the comments! 👇

We’re living in a time where it’s easy to become successful, but really hard to sustain it.

Many times when success happens fast (and easier than it should), you don’t build the discipline you need to sustain that success.

I pray that everyone has struggles during early success because it will serve them well to build the long-term stamina and humility that’s required to earn long-term success.

When people ask me what the greatest risk to continued success is, I always say it’s success itself. When you start believing your own press and basking in the admiration of others, you take your eye off the ball of what got you there in the first place.

My advice to anyone who starts to find success is to keep your head down and keep working hard. Stay on your toes. Don’t look back- only forward. And PLEASE, please, please put money in the bank instead of in a fancy car.

While people often say life is short so buy the watch or the shoes or the car…. I like to say….life is long- don’t get it wrong. When you find success and continue to maintain that success, you’ll build the character, discipline and humility required to go the distance in your career! (Then you can buy the car!)

The journey is the destination.

It took me a long time to understand that. When I look back on all of these years at BTC, what stands out the most- the moments I am most proud of- are the ones that were the hardest. Those moments where I had to power through and push myself to places I had never been— or never thought I could or would go.

When great leaders see something in you that you don’t see in yourself, lean into it. Embrace the hard stuff. Embrace the discomfort.

Honestly, it’s the hard stuff where true growth happens. It’s where the best of life is found. It’s where you build the stamina that gives you the energy and confidence to not quit- and instead to go the distance to achieve your dreams.

We have all witnessed the devastation caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton over the past three weeks. These storms have brought tremendous pain and loss to our community of hairdressers.

We’ve seen the pictures of destroyed salons and heard the stories of stylists losing their homes, their businesses, their tools, and their livelihoods.

But there’s one thing we must ensure they don’t lose: their hope.

At BTC, we will be transforming our BTC “On Tour” show on October 21st—a week from Monday—into a benefit event to provide financial support to hairdressers in need. We’ve partnered with the PBA’s Disaster Relief Fund, where today you can make a donation of $10 or more to help hairdressers affected by the storm. In return, you’ll receive FREE ACCESS to our entire live broadcast of BTC “On Tour” from Nashville on October 21st!

Later today, we will also be announcing a very special celebrity guest, who will be joining us LIVE in Nashville to emcee the event and share his incredible hairdressing journey!

Remember, 100% of your donations—every single dollar—will go directly to hairdressers in need through our partnership with the Professional Beauty Association.

Every dollar counts. We can all skip our Starbucks for a few days to help our community in need! Just imagine—if 100 people gave $10, that’s $1,000! If 1,000 people gave, that would be $10,000!

This is a time for all of us to come together and bring hope to a community of hairdressers who are truly struggling from these devastating storms. Comment HELP to donate now! We’ll see you on October 21st—LIVE from Nashville! And if you’d like to join us in person, tickets are still available!

With gratitude,
Mary & The BTC Team

My legacy after 24 years of @behindthechair_com will never be about me. It will be about you.

Did I help you find and accept your greatness and convince you to believe that you are worthy of whatever dream you are willing to work for? Did I remind you not to shrink to make others comfortable when you decide to grow? Did I remind you that power has responsibility. That young hairdressers are watching. Did I remind you that “my” legacy is “your” success, your hard work, your belief in yourself and your desire to fight for your dream.

After all these years there are many things I know to be true. The most important one is that while the world continues to tell you to be average, the true gift and joy of life is found in the hard work on the journey to greatness. It’s found in the discomfort, in pushing yourself to places you never thought you could go. It’s in saying, “I can’t believe I just did that!” And knowing that you did!

Choosing greatness and working hard towards a dream will change you into the person you were meant to be.

Thank you for joining us at @thebtcshow 2024! We hope we created a “safe space” for thousands of you who decided to scream from the rooftops that you have a BIG dream and you’re not afraid to share it!
