A younger Max couldn’t imagine being openly queer, let alone being on a fucking billboard, as part of a nationwide Pride campaign.
Black queer folks rarely get this spotlight, and we’re rarely seen as beautiful or worthy enough for this type of visibility.
Stopping by the mall for the first time with
@krys_t_ yesterday I was immediately brought to tears because the billboard reminded me that the world is changing, and collectives like
@lotion.mag are helping to lead that change.
This billboard is not just a dream for me, it’s a dream for young African boys who come from strict upbringings and aren’t allowed to be queer and expressive. Queer kids of colour who are still carving out their own identities are going to look at this
@lotion.mag billboard and know that there is no limit to the worlds they can create for themselves. For me, there’s no greater honour than knowing how we’ll influence those who see us and hear our stories.
I pray that young queer kids that come from the life I did will see this billboard at the mall and be like “damn....one day I’m going to be on a billboard, make music, be a director, DJ, etc. etc.”
I wasn’t cool growing up and didn’t think I’d be doing half the shit I’m doing today. To all the young queers, just know that if I can do it, you can do it too. 😂❤️
Thank u
@lotion.mag @rightmood @forever_next_door @holtrenfrew for this life changing opportunity.
S/O to
@krys_t_ for coming with me and holding space for me to feel all the feelings yesterday. I love you so much! ❤️
Grandma, I love you and miss you. Thank you for keeping your spirit close as I continue to rediscover joy. 🕊️🙏🏾
This year, Pride is about turning my pain into power and seeing the things I’ve dreamed of for so many years come to fruition.
Being queer is the best thing to ever happen to me and now I got a billboard to prove it. Happy Pride. 🫂❤️🌈
