On set in Stockholm an arrangement of pieces from our collection including the unique three-seater sofa designed by Kaare Klint, Denmark, 1916.

Kaare Klint, the father of Modern Danish Design, designed this unique three-seater sofa in 1916. The sofa is among his very early designs and should thus be seen as a prime example of the first steps in the movement that would later evolve into the ‘golden age of Danish design’. The aesthetic of the sofa is characterised by clean, pure lines and the use of the best materials of the time — attributes that would later define the work of Kaare Klint as a whole.

Pieces included:

Three-seater sofa designed by Kaare Klint, manufactured by cabinetmaker N.M. Rasmussen. Holbæk. H, Denmark, 1916.

Rug ‘The Herb Garden’ designed by Märta Måås-Fjetterström for Märta Måås-Fjetterström AB, Sweden, 1934.

Cabinet designed by Otto Schulz for Firma Boet, Sweden, 1939.

Table lamp PH 4/3 designed by Poul Henningsen for Louis Poulsen, Denmark, 1927.

Occasional table model U 601 designed by Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn, Sweden, 1960s -1970s.

Vase designed by Wilhelm Kåge for Gustavsberg, Sweden, 1930s.

Sculpture designed by Gunnar Nylund for Rörstrand, Sweden, 1950s.

Framed drawing ‘Rider in a Spring Landscape’ by Vicke Lindstrand, Sweden, 1950s.

Framed drawing ‘Couple in a Spring Landscape’ by Vicke Lindstrand, Sweden, 1950s.

Featured above are some of Modernity’s collection of Axel Einar Hjorth pieces, including the ‘Utö’ sofa and a pair of ‘Lovö’ chairs.

Hjorth’s designs - whether from the luxuriousness of neo-classicism to the severity of functionalism - are sharply distinct in style, materials, and character. Unlike many of his contemporaries however, he did not conform to the socially oriented ideas produced by Svensk Form. He often incorporated playful ornamentation from different historical periods from which he was inspired, such as French Art Deco, using mixed exotic woods, bright colours, and textiles.

Pieces in this arrangement:

Sofa ‘Utö’ designed by Axel Einar Hjorth for Nordiska Kompaniet, Sweden, 1930s.

Pair of chairs model ‘Lovö’ designed by Axel-Einar Hjorth for Nordiska Kompaniet, Sweden, 1930s.

Table, anonymous, Sweden, 1950s.

Dish designed by Berndt Friberg for Gustavsberg, Sweden, 1950s.

Rug ‘Ursula’ designed by Märta Måås-Fjetterström for MMF, Sweden, 1935.

Paavo Tynell | “Snowflake” Chandelier, circa 1954 - 1956

Tynell’s Snowflake chandeliers are evocative of the decorative ornaments that were customary to hang at home during colder, darker Finnish winters. Twinkling warm light would imitate sparkling snowfall, creating a sense of winter magic.

This example is exceptional due to the remarkable number of snowflakes. With 64 at 12 cm in diameter, this was a custom order of the standard 9041 model with 40 flakes.

Today we’ve updated our website with our newest additions, including ‘The Flag Halyard Chair’ by Hans Wegner for Getama (Denmark, 1950s).

This particular piece features rare original rubber shoes on the base, a detail that adds authenticity and further highlights the chair’s early production.

The Halyard Chair stands as one of Wegner’s most innovative and iconic designs, diverging from his wood-centric work to embrace modern materials while maintaining an organic, relaxed aesthetic. This piece, with its rare details, represents a true collector’s item—combining craftsmanship, comfort, and timeless design.

The Halyard Chair (model PP225), designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1950, is one of his most distinctive and innovative works, showcasing his mastery in combining form, function, and craftsmanship. The Halyard Chair is a lounge chair that perfectly balances comfort and sculptural beauty. The design was inspired by Wegner’s experience lounging in the sand dunes of Denmark, where he envisioned the idea of a chair shaped to mimic a reclining, relaxed posture.

The Halyard Chair demonstrates Wegner’s ability to experiment with materials and break from tradition. While many of his chairs emphasise wood craftsmanship, this piece highlights his versatility as a designer and his ability to blend modern materials with organic shapes.

A selection of pieces from our collection including the model 2466 table lamp designed by Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn (Sweden, 1950s).

An understated and timeless design, the model 2466 is found in both a table lamp and floor lamp silhouette. The brass base structure is encased by lacquered metal often of a white, black or green tone with a range of different lampshades available. The simplicity of this design is emblematic of Josef Frank’s ‘lightweight and elegant’ ideals. He believed that “the home should be personal and comfortable” and emulated this in his warm and familiar designs.

Image courtesy of a @covetnoir project where one of Sandra Davolio vessels from our collection was featured.

Sandra Davolio is an acclaimed contemporary Danish-Italian ceramic artist who has been represented by Modernity for more than ten years. Davolio takes her inspiration from nature and the ceramic traditions of the ancient Etruscan culture. Her technique involves throwing the vessel before applying rolls of wet porcelain to the body of the piece. She then carefully thumbs these into her characteristically delicate fringe-like protrusions, resulting in organic biomorphic forms that resemble corals or blossoms. The play of light on the pleats of the white porcelain is particularly striking.

A collection of our pieces including the mahogany and leather ‘Addition’ sofa designed by Kaare Klint for Rud Rasmussen (Denmark, 1933).

The sofa features a button-tufted leather upholstery in a rich cognac hue, adding a luxurious and tactile quality to the piece. Its clean, geometric lines reflect Klint’s mastery of proportion and structure, combining minimalist aesthetics with a deep respect for traditional woodworking techniques. The solid mahogany legs provide a sturdy foundation, enhancing the sofa’s sense of durability while keeping the design visually light.

Klint designed this sofa as part of a modular system known as the ‘Addition’ series, where individual pieces could be combined to create flexible seating arrangements suited for smaller spaces or larger configurations. The compact nature of the sofa makes it ideal for modern interiors that require versatile and efficient furniture solutions.

Other pieces in this arrangement:
