Julia Sue Dotson is afraid of the indefinite. “Uncertainty… that all the systems you thought you could believe in are just Wizard of Oz, a little man behind a curtain.”

But we’re beyond certain that the recent graduate of the fashion MA at Central Martins is going places, thanks to their eclectic patchwork pieces crafted from reclaimed materials including napkins, tablecloths and paper bags.

A gentle soul and gender non-conformist, we spoke to Julia to learn more about their work. “There is so much textile waste that you can make clothes from and that act of repair is a tiny bandage on a massive problem but it’s still a signal,” they said.

What possesses you to give away everything you own? A record insurance payout made Californian mother Diane Johnson wealthy, but over the years she has regifted almost all the luxurious things she spent years – and millions – acquiring.

For Issue 08, we invited Diane to be interviewed and photographed by her daughter, Leigh Johnson, for an intimate, enlightening lesson in materialism.

“I was young and enjoyed it – I had a great life, I could buy anything, I looked good, got my hair done, nails done, I travelled, bought clothes, gave my kids everything I wanted, bought anything I wanted… When you get to my age, which is old, you start appreciating the smaller things in life.”

Artist Ujin Lin’s highly original works — inspired by origami — revolve around draped, folded, crinkled and crumpled pieces of scrap paper rendered by AI and worn by ethereal avatars.

“This state of being ugly before the eventual splendour is what I find very exciting in fashion,” he told us for the new Issue 08.

Here are some exclusive animations of his work just for us (and you).

Watch where they’re going! The Farago Projects Prize for emerging talents is a biannual initiative committed to nurturing the next generation of artists.

This year’s photography winner, John Spyrou, was selected by a panel of judges including More or Less editor Jaime Perlman. If that wasn’t enough, he was given access to the archives of Jean Paul Gaultier for a new array of JPGs.

Capturing the self-absorption of the modern pedestrian, it turns the viewer into a voyeur, spying from the sidewalk.

What keeps you sane? That’s the question of Issue 08’s thinkpiece, posed to a coterie of mindful creatives and pondered over by writer Roisin Lanigan.

“While my work is primarily a form of learning and self-expression, it’s also the thing that keeps me sane,” says photographer Chris Smith, pictured in this self-portrait.

“Whenever I feel uninspired, creating brings a sense of reinvigoration and calm, and with every new image I work on, the world starts to feel right again.”

Committed, self-sufficient and defiant, John Alexander Skelton is the kind of fashion designer who looks forward by revisiting and rewriting history.

For Issue 08, More Or Less created this shoot at a vegetable growing co-op outside London, with volunteers modelling Skelton’s flamboyant, reactionary creations.

“I always want to subvert everything. Even if it’s just putting something in a different context, like cutting a fabric that was traditionally used for something else,” he says.

Fine Cell Work is cut from a different cloth: it’s the only wide-scale British charity and social enterprise to pay offenders an earned income while they’re inside.

For 26 years, it’s supported over 8,000 individuals to learn needlework, resulting in projects from bookmarks through to tapestries produced in tandem with Wolfgang Tillmans and Ai Wei Wei.

This story for the new issue of More or Less saw writer Alix Fox visit a post-release workshop in Battersea, meeting the sewists moving the needle.

The personal archive of fashion designer Antonio Marras is a certified textile trove.

Housed in an underground vault at his family home in Sardinia, it comprises rare pieces from his Kenzo collections plus antique garments from his travels across the world.

These pieces, collated over the last 30 years, continue to be a source of inspiration for his creative design process today. For this new Issue 08 story, Marras gave More Or Less the key to his precious collection.
