Carlo Rivetti in Tokyo: An Interview with the Stone Island Icon
You don’t need to be a fashion enthusiast to recognize the significance of Stone Island. Founded in 1982 by Massimo Osti, the brand has become synonymous with technical innovation and cultural significance.
From football fans to avant-garde fashion, the brand has cemented its place as one of the most influential in fashion history.
Stone Island has always been a beacon of functional discovery, revered for pushing the limits of textile technology and design. Known for its experimental fabric treatments and dyeing techniques, the brand produces garments that are not only visually compelling but also incredibly practical. Under the current stewardship of Carlo Rivetti, who has maintained the brand’s commitment to innovation and quality. Rivetti has also expanded its global footprint, making it a staple in both streetwear and high fashion landscapes.
2 years after of celebrating its 40th anniversary, Stone Island is releasing an updated edition of Storia, a comprehensive guide to the brand’s illustrious history. Diving deeper than ever into the archives; by showcasing coveted pieces and lesser-known designs, Storia offers a rare glimpse into the creative processes that define Stone Island’s DNA.
In addition, longtime collaborator
@kentonioyamamoto directed Infinite Colours, a “docu-poem” offering a unique look into Stone Island’s ethos of transparency and innovation. The work explores the community at the brand’s headquarters in Ravarino, Italy, located in Emilia-Romagna’s industrial district.
Through intimate narratives from employees, it captures the journey from design conception, production fabric dyeing and final approval, reflecting the spirit of continual experimentation and craftsmanship central to Stone Island.
We sat down with Rivetti to explore what makes Stone Island the gold standard of technical brands. From groundbreaking innovations to its enduring influence across subcultures, Rivetti reflected on the brand’s evolution and its role in shaping the past, present, and future of fashion.
