2023 flew by! Here are some of our (and your) fave interviews from the past year

SIMON UNGLESS –Simon has been in the world of fashion since perhaps before you were born. Starting with befriending and collaborating with a then unknown McQueen at CSM to running the fashion department at AAU...

CLARE PRESS –In this exclusive interview, Clare discusses her evolution from Vogue writer to podcaster, how the fashion industry can become more responsible, and how readers can join her in consuming more consciously.

Amanda McCarty –Between their personal experience in the fashion industry along with talking weekly to other experts Amanda starts the conversations that we all want to be a part of...

Rahemur Rahman "if the aim of you making clothes is at the cost to communities like mine, or the Black experience or from across Asia, surely there are other ways around it than creating these collections."

Jess Natale "I think the most impactful moments have been working with families and people who are directly impacted by what goes on in this country."

Kendall Ross "when a man calls it a craft, I think, Are you saying that because you’ve placed it below what you consider art? So at some point, I made a conscious choice to stop calling it craft"

threads + tits –our favorite fashion moment this season came during Berlin fashion week at an Adidas show…that wasn’t actually Adidas! Meet the designers...

Vanessa Barboni Hallik "you know, we have to get this right. And so, on the days that feel really hard, you look at who’s inheriting this planet from us…"

Alec Smith "I was focused on the representation and the semiotics of genders. I explored what is considered masculine, what is considered feminine, and what we inherently decide as queer."

Nergiz de Baere "imagine getting the most up-to-date info about climate + feminism in one online hub."

shout-out to our interviewers @thejacquelinepham @christinedawndeleon @oliviaterasedesigns @steph.laws kldunn and @katyanyc

While donating to a thrift store might seem like a good idea, much of it still ends up in landfills.⁣
Before donating consider some of these other take back programs.⁣
For example, did you know gently used bras can be resold at a greater profit than most other clothing items? @freethegirlsbras works with women who had formerly been sex trafficked to give them a way to earn a living by selling bras in their secondhand markets.⁣
⁣
See all of our options –and even more on our site.⁣

We recently interviewed Rachel Ceruti on the merging of @fab_scrap and @reclypt -In the interview she mentioned “pre-consumer textile waste” and we thought a quick explanation would be helpful! So here it is ;) Read entire interview by @anne_whiting_ on No Kill Mag -link in bio!

If your IG feed is like ours, you are drowning in stats and visuals imploring you not to shop this Black Friday.

And we get it. But we also think this is a flawed approach. (more on that later/another post)

So we wanted to share with you how @theorispresent is leveraging #Blackfriday to showcase the genius designers from Accra who have upcycled clothing sourced from Accra’s Kantamanto Market, the largest secondhand clothing market in the world.

They've partnered with @vestiaireco to sell these unique pieces with the proceeds going back to the designers and to the Or's Secondhand Solidarity Fund.

Between 80 and 150 billion new garments are produced every year, yet, there’s already enough clothing in circulation to clothe the next six generations.

This overproduction is destroying the environment and wreaking havoc on communities in the Global South.

The solution ISN'T deprivation, No new clothes. It's redefining "new" clothes to mean upcycled.

Moreover, this initiative challenges our collective understanding of luxury. Luxury in this context isn’t defined by price tags or brand names but by the unique stories of each piece, the craftsmanship it embodies, and the positive impact it has on the environment and the community.

It’s a luxury that’s inclusive, thoughtful, and impactful.

Link in bio for more info and direct links to collection or search for the or foundation on Vestiaire to find the collection.

Forget about #blackfridaydeals and #CyberMonday -What we love is #GivingTuesday a day for radical generosity.

This doesn’t mean just money but can be your time as well. We picked 5 fashion-related NYC based organizations that accepts volunteers as well as donations. They are @fab_scrap @customcolab @remakeourworld @xr_nyc @nsifashion2030

Recently, the Free to Be Youth Project held a fashion show that featured gender-affirming and all upcycled runway looks, designed and modeled by Free to Be Youth clients.

We are honored that they shared these photos with us. They reflect a sample of what was created for the event.

The show will be part of the upcoming documentary, “Becoming,” which explores the nuances of gender-affirming care from the perspective of unhoused and at-risk LGBTQ+ youth as they envision what is possible for their future looks and lives, deconstruct and reconstruct clothing and ideas, and work on and off the runway to become their most authentic selves.

Both the film and fashion show highlight the importance of legal services, medical services, and social transition supports in the journey to authentic self-expression.

"Gender-affirming care supports gender identity and expression holistically, addressing gender dysphoria and safety concerns for LGBTQ+ youth through medical procedures, legal support, and social transition. However, financial, social, and political barriers disenfranchise housing-insecure and at-risk youth from accessing the proven benefits of this care.

Despite these seemingly insurmountable barriers to self-expression and safety, our clients have harnessed the power of creativity and community as they persist on their journey to authentic self-expression." shared Amy Leipziger, Project Director, Free to Be Youth Project

We recently went to the Future Fabrics Expo. So many amazing innovations which we’ll share soon. As we learn about the better alternatives to fossil fuel fabrics we need to start asking brands -especially upscale brands– why they’re not using them. #biomaterials #circularfashion #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativefashion #naturalfibers
