The Garden of Time. Sleeping Beauties, Reawakening Fashion. Met Gala 2024. The Met Gala themes this year were very thought provoking. What exactly is a Garden of Time? What does it mean to be a sleeping beauty? If we’re reawakening fashion, has it been asleep? If so, for how long? I’ve always deeply revered not only the regalia of the Met, but the storied history of what it represents to Fashion and its houses internationally. My life and work as an artist has been directly inspired by the passions of ateliers and artisans made visible in wearable pieces of art. Fashion is my reason for being. To answer my own question, Fashion is constantly sleeping and reawakening. The sleeping beauties are esteemed archival pieces, but also the young, daring and innovative new names yearning to be known. The true Garden of Time is our shared experience. We all must bravely face seasons of decay, if we desire to be properly reborn with the reward and fervor that new life has to offer. The goal is not to avoid the inevitability of death, but rather to embrace the beauty of wilting.
