I don’t think I ever shared this unique preparation on here. This is a Catholic Last Rites or sick rites set. A priest would use this to visit the home of a sick person to give them communion or last rites in the case of death. The maxillary section of the skull hinges open to reveal 2 candles. Under the cranial cap is a holy water bottle and crucifix. This is a very unique way where osteology, religion and art were combined.

A true friend is someone that you can say anything to, whether it be good, bad, ugly, genuine or otherwise. They won’t judge you or think differently of you and they are always there to help guide you. Stanley Cohn is not only my father but my best friend. Let’s wish Stanley, (who should have been in those “most interesting man alive” commercials) a happy 81st birthday today!

Here is one of my favorite antiquarian books on religion. Ecclesiae militantis triumphi” which dates to 1585 and translates to “the triumph of the Church Militant” in English; “Ecclesia militans” means “the Church Militant,” referring to the Church on Earth, actively fighting against spiritual forces, and “triumphi” means “triumphs. This book has some of the most graphic & grizzly imagery on the ways in which one can meet their end. A must read if you are morbid.

Today the bone museum team is stepping out of our usual territory and exploring Ryan Matthew Cohn @ryanmatthewcohn and Regina M. Rossi’s @reginamarierossi incredible collection of incredible antiques . While we usually focus on human bone, we thought this collection was amazing and incredibly fascinating.

Ancient vs modern. I spent much of my career collecting artifacts of a specific date. Which was predominantly ancient to Victorian. At various times I would start to trickle in more modern works in hopes of broadening the scope of my collection. It is important to me and to show onlookers how death has been captured by artists throughout the centuries. Each having their own interpretation of life’s inevitable conclusion. I’m constantly adding works. And it’s been a fascinating journey to evolve as a collector. Each day, month and year striving for new inspiration. All it takes is one addition to alter a collectors mind and change one’s path until it’s on to the next.
