Later a pioneering punk and a party-scene fixture, DeLear always wore who he was on his sleeve—unapologetically Black and queer in a conservative area of 1970s California—and his diaries offer a fearless and frank account of his adolescence. Tonight, I’m reading motherhood pages from the great Anne Truitt’s diaries @shahgargfoundation in celebration of the exhibition Making Their Mark, curated by @ceciliaalemani “I am not interested in what cannot be.” Me, neither!

I am hugely proud of so many things that @nicolasparty has done. This might be the proudest, seeing him add his voice to those 70 years of voices @parisreview which have been such valued companions to me in my work as a writer and artist. I remember when, nearly a decade ago, radiant with his find, Nicolas brought home as a gift the first ten issues of the magazine from @mastbooks. Congratulations, my love, your vision is a beautiful addition to the shelf.
