The glaring lack of wearable darker foundations in the natural and organic makeup world has been painfully obvious to me for years. As a makeup artist it is imperative to be able to have the right colours and tones for anyone who sits in front of you. I wrote this article over a year ago for Eco Age but have updated again for Conscious Beauty Union and added a few more brands we’ve discovered since then. B R I D A L P E R S O N A L I T Y I wanted to highlight how bridal makeup does not depend on trends or fashion - the makeup you choose on your wedding day is entirely down to your own personality. For this beautiful shoot I chose @its_me_daisy_p to be my model because she looks equally beautiful without any makeup as much as she does with a lot of makeup. (& so many of my personal clients are makeup phobic) I wanted to show how you can look stunning in a number of different ways based solely on what works for you! When it comes to your wedding day (or any other special occasion for that matter) don’t ever feel as though you ‘have’ to look a certain way. The look you choose will be down to what makes you feel most like yourself - that is the most important thing when deciding on a wedding look - feeling entirely like the best version of yourself! The interesting thing for me about these 3 looks is which one ‘looks’ the most natural vs which one actually ‘is’ the most natural. It's the season to G L O W ✨🪩 The secret to a beautiful and effective highlighter is subtlety. A highlighter's main objective is to reflect light, like a mirror - which in turn creates a glow of health and luminous skin. It also opens up your features - like when used on the eyelids (my favourite and must-do area for highlighter). So stay away from products with visible glitter (unless glitter is what you're going for) - you want fine, soft particles that are barely visible and only have this beautiful prism-like effect. ABOUT ‘NO MAKEUP’ MAKEUP aka your 5 minute face. What most of my personal clients want to know is how they can do their makeup in the easiest and most minimal way - this can vary in degrees of simplicity for some, but for your basic over-all & very simple ‘no makeup’ look, these are my go-to products. SKIN: @madaracosmetics City CC SPF 15 - it’s lightweight with enough coverage to even out skin tone but still see your skin.It gives a beautiful moisturised finish. It’s my favourite because it suits the most different skin types with a natural formula. CONCEALER: @madaracosmetics The Concealer - again, a lightweight formula that gives good coverage for blemishes and under eyes and magically without creasing for most skin types - another win in natural formulations. BLUSH: @hirocosmetics Multi-stick - I love any multi product, this one is great because it’s a cream that goes on with a slightly powdery finish giving you the best of both worlds. It doesn’t give too much or too little product. I also use the highlight colours on eyelids for a bit of glow. BROWS: @iliabeauty In Frame Brow Gel - go for clear or coloured, this gel perfectly sets your brows for the day and gives them the right amount of sheen. The small brush is great for lightly touching to the skin to fill in little gaps if needed (top tip: always brush through your brows with a clean spoolie after applying brow colour to even out the colour) MASCARA: @iliabeauty Fullest Volumising Mascara - for mascara there are as many preferences as there are people, but this one can give you clean separated long lashes or can be layered for a more spider lash effect. LIPS: @burtsbeesuk Tinted Lip Balms - this is my go-to lip colour any day of the week. So low maintenance and great for touching up on the go. Your lips stay moisturised whilst having a lovely soft colour. ABOUT BRUSHES I often get asked which brush sets are best for personal use or to buy as gifts for others. For a long time I didn’t have a good answer because I couldn’t find something minimal, essential and ethical all in one that made sense to me. Also, for doing one’s own makeup - I usually recommend using your fingers the most. But when it comes to using powder based products, you do want a brush for best application. For myself, I use a brush for blush the most often. I would use an angle brush for lining eyes for definition on occasion and a powder brush for either bronzer or mineral powder if I wanted to set my makeup for a more formal event. I use an eyebrow brush daily (but often in a brow product). These 3 brands have my favourite offerings for a small and effective selection of makeup brushes. You certainly don’t need them all, but with this, you’re pretty much covered for most eventualities. 1. @tropicskincare - I love these dual purpose brushes, I love that the brush sizes are medium for powders & blush rather than large. Their texture is great and they cover everything you need. I have a number of these in my kit. They are also one of the most sustainable brands out there. 2. @ecotools - These are honestly the best for your essential set, they’re super affordable, great for gifting and also sustainably made. 3. @mykitco - This brand is more geared to professionals (don’t get too side tracked by all the many cool options). For your own makeup kit, this is a great set that will cover you for literally anything you need to do. Made with professionals in mind, these are great quality. Remember to wash your brushes with a natural soap bar at least once a month (if you use them most days). Rinse them till the water runs clear, gently squeeze the water out of the bristles while making sure they’re back in the correct shape.
